The First Memorial for American Lynchings

This is a rather lengthy article, but well worth reading. Until we realize the roots of our racial problems, we cannot move forward. This memorial elicits an emotional response of the horrors of America's dark dirty little secret.

It is about The National Memorial for Peace and Justice which opened today, April 26, 2018.

What is there to care about?

My relatives were getting lynched and raped by Turks about the same time. But you won't see me getting all weepy about it.

I'm curious though, so we should only feel sorry for the blacks that were lynched during this period but not the white people who were also lynched correct?

A lot of people don't realize this but about 40% of the victims were white. (although this figure is debatable and there have been wide ranging estimates)
It's believed somewhere around 30% of the victims had been accused of raping a white woman. (In many instances men were falsely accused by women who were too ashamed to admit they had been carrying on a relationship with a black man)
6% were committed by mixed-race crowds, or by black communities. Probably not a lot of records were kept back then when it was black-on-black, so the real percentage was probably a bit higher.

 

Speak the name Isaac Woodward, or Emmett Till, or Medgar Evers and then it means something to me (none of these men were lynched). Put the human face on it, put the story of good men unjustly killed to it, and my heart is sad.

Make the past about present politics and I don't give a damn.

The Memorial and Museum is less than 300 miles from us. We will probably go if the admission fee is reasonable as we camp at Lake Lurleen, pretty close, 2 hours. I see similarities to the Wall.

 

Thank you very much. There is a large Armenian community in a city near me. They have a remembrance day, every year, to honor those who died in the Armenian genocide.

 

It helps them to remember their heritage.

I don't have any issue with a memorial since its a great counterpoint to all those stupid Confederate general statues that people want keep around and glorify. That being said saying that "white people need to atone" is just ****ing idiotic and shows a completely lack of not only basic critical thinking skills but also a completely lack of historical knowledge. Most Americans today are descendants of the Second Wave of immigration which occurred in the late 1800s and early 1900s after the Civil War was over and after slavery was banned entirely. Even before that you only had slavery in the South so why are people in the North somehow being called out on it as you have to go back prior to 1804 to find slavery in the North. If you want to point to a group of people and demand that they apologize then point to people that run around bragging about how proud they are of their "Confederate" heritage and how their great great great grand pappy fought for them. The Irish, Italians, Germans and so forth that immigrated here had absolutely nothing do to with slavery in the US so they have nothing to apologize for.

 

They have plenty of more pleasant things to remember. As do the Greeks.

There is really nothing ennobling about being a victim.
