Hopefully, within the next 50 years EVERYTHING will run on hydrogen in one way or another. Oil will be used only as a lubricant! We may be able to agree on something like that, but solar has only, at best, a limited appeal.

I see much more potential in wind power than I do in solar -- unless you live in Death Valley or some place similar....

 

Been looking at wind power too but the household units tend to be noisy and require constant maintenance. If the unit is even slightly out of balance it will vibrate and if the bearings are worn they make loud noises. Neither of those are something you want on the roof of your house so I am waiting for something a little more robust before I take that leap. At this point in time a few extra panels and batteries ensures uninterrupted power so I am in no rush.

And no, I don't live in Death Valley but I get plenty of sunshine for most of the year which works for me.

Being near the Rockies makes wind power a reasonable alternative so I can see the appeal in your area. Perhaps a neighborhood commercial wind generator for your entire community would be the way to go.

 

It's just a matter of time and not too much time either, I don't think. Maybe nuclear power is more profitable for the big wigs and they'd rather not see wind power in every household so they're sabotaging it every chance they get.

About 6 months ago my wife said something about solar panels and some other things that passed into one of my ears and out the other.

My hearing is bad anyway and I don't always pay close attention to the many projects she has going pretty much all year round.

One morning about 3 months ago I woke up and looked out the bedroom window and saw my wife standing out in our front field with about 8 workmen, 3 large trucks, 1 very large truck, 1 large trenching machine, a smaller trencher and a few pick-up trucks.

So I just assumed that a large work crew had gotten lost and she was giving them directions and went to make my morning coffee. Like every morning, my old Siamese cat was loudly demanding his breakfast as I was feeding the two dogs.

I went to my office and sat at my desk which overlooks the front field and then noticed that this lost work crew was beginning to off load the trenchers, another large and bizarre machine and lots of space age looking blue things, spools of wire and silver painted sections. of steel.

After finally walking down to see what was going on, talking to my wife who was talking to the guy with the most clipboards and reluctantly signing some forms, I am currently the proud owner of a large structure that looks like a cross between a large spaceship and a billboard for passing birds.

"The Thing", as I used to refer to it, is about 10' X 100' and even though the trees block it from my view, I still don't like the looks of it but at least it becomes less offensive to me with each compliment I get for my ecological consciousness and my zeal to save the planet.

 

The problem is that nuclear power was never profitable for utilities. They ended being saddled with the long term headaches after the original politicians that approved them had all retired on their kickbacks from the nuclear-industrial-complex.

This is why utilities are the ones driving the big investments into solar and wind power. They no longer want to be held hostage to either the fossil fuel cartel or the nuclear regulators. Once installed wind and solar are relatively easy to maintain and do not result in toxic pollution afterwards.

So yes, it is only a matter of time now.

 

I am sure your spouse just rolls her eyes whenever YOU get those compliments.

It's gotten to be quite a joke especially when my wife is reminded by others how lucky she is to have found such a thoughtful and environmentally concerned man.

 

I don't remember where it is now but there was a discussion against wind power on some discussion forum (this one?) where they slander wind power left, right and centre going on about how wind turbines are ugly and are dangerous to birds, etc. and that nuclear power is the only way to go. I had to punch myself in the nose to see if I was having a nightmare.

 

Ever notice how it is ALWAYS the same SHILLS who make all of those bogus allegations about green energy alternatives?

They ignore the fact that more birds are killed by ugly high rise buildings each year by several orders of magnitude.

Essentially they are objecting to change because it moves them out of their comfort zone.

But, just as with the frog in the pot of water that is gradually brought to the boil, the impact of continuing to use fossil fuels and nuclear power come back to bite them and everyone else. The wildfires blanketing the nation with clouds of soot are way more dangerous than a wind turbine or solar panels.

Every nuclear plant in the nation is susceptible to having a radioactive problem with their storage pools of used rods.

We cannot continue with the current energy model since it is making the planet unsustainable for life as we know it.

One thing is for sure -- to my dying day I'll be rabidly opposed to power plants that run on nuclear fission!

Although no big 'fan-boy' of solar or a number of today's trendy 'alternatives', I'd rather go back to coal (with today's electrostatic scrubbing technology) than to see even one more of those nuclear monsters put into use anywhere but outer space....

Hint: Chernobyl... Fukushima....

I'm confident we would have learned of any nuclear accident on a U.S. Navy vessel. And their spent fuel has been routinely disposed of safely.

A variety of responses come to mind, including a skeptical reaction about what any country's military bureaucracy will reveal about the actual impact of nuclear accidents they've sustained, but instead of all the 'tit-for-tat', I'll just cut to the chase --

How many 'Chernobyl's' did it take have a devastating effect on the planet? Answer: ONE. Chernobyl created a radioactive cloud which drifted not only over Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine, but also over most of Europe and as far as Canada. It affected at least 7,722 square miles!

How many 'Fukushima's' has it taken to contaminate the entire Pacific Ocean with measurable levels of nuclear toxicity, some of worse of which will last for thousands of years, and some of which continues to be released by the Japanese into the ocean right up to this day (with more releases of this deadly crap planned for the near future)? Answer: ONE.

Afterthought: Currently, there are about 443 nuclear reactors in operation in approximately 30 countries around the world. How likely is it that MORE of them are going to sustain catastrophic 'accidents' before we can finally get rid of all of them...? Does it matter...?!

No. It doesn't matter because we're never going to get rid of them. Why? Because if non-CO2-emitting power ever becomes a real objective then nuclear power will be the only viable alternative for base load power generation.

When we resume somewhere else down the road, I'll be offering you hydrogen in various forms as being VASTLY superior to nuclear fission.

You are quoting official American military sources?! Maybe the official Russian military sources say the US has had hundreds of nuclear accidents. Why not believe that? The US government stated:

* Thousands upon thousands of WMDs in Irak
* The Vietnamese attacked the US Navy in the Gulf of Tonkin
* etc. etc. etc. Nothing but lies from the Whine House, the Pentagram, and the CIA.
