Abortion provides several important social functions that are only exacerbated when abortion is restricted.

    Population Control

There are already far too many humans living on earth. That and economic conditions being what they are, women should average no more than two children - the replacement rate. There are only so many resources that the earth can provide. Adding more people can only degrade life on earth for all of us. Birth control options and use have been increasing but it is always good to have readily available the birth control of last resort, abortion.

    The Emancipation of Women

With the advent of birth control women have been given a great deal of freedom. Now they can have sex without worrying about becoming pregnant and having children they do not want. Women can now have fulfilling lives beyond the traditional roles women previously were chained to. The forces that want to restrict abortion also want to restrict all birth control. This was clearly evident when conservatives were making a big stink over the fact that the Affordable Care Act included coverage for birth control.

A Better Gene Pool/ Healthier Society

With modern technology birth defects and genetic problems can be detected early in a pregnancy. It seems to me to be rather unconscionable to knowingly bring into the world children who will have to face a lifetime of suffering and unnecessary hardships, and who will never achieve a fulfilling life.

    Reduction in Crime

When one investigates the causes of crime one finds that those individuals who grew up in households where they were unwanted and unloved are far more likely to commit crimes. Abortion has had the benefit of greatly reducing the number of unwanted children. Abortion was made legal in 1972. By 1990 the crime rate began to drop, and especially violent crime, a trend that has continued to this day. If one notices, the crime rate began to drop at exactly the time where if many of those aborted fetuses had been born, they would have begun reaching the age where one is more likely to commit crimes.

There are those who say that the crime rate drop was a result of the more draconian efforts of mostly conservatives to imprison more people. They will cite things like Rudy Giuliani and his broken window policies. Yet most of the country never adopted such policies and still saw a decrease in crime. As some of the mandatory sentencing has been backed off, we have not seen an increase in crime. Also, it should be pointed out, in those states that have the most restrictions on abortion, the crime rate is noticeably higher than in those states with generous abortion policies.

The Advancement of Science and Society

The history of science is full of the forces of regression and nescience, conservatism and religion, doing their best to suppress the advances of science. However, in the modern age, science has been winning. In part because of its successes and in part because those forces of opposition have been busy in their efforts to restrict reproductive rights, rights for homosexuals, and in their rather humorous efforts to deny global warming. All the while science has marched on, making the belief system of those forces of opposition even less tenable for the younger generations.

    It's murder.

And we're repealing Roe v Wade whether you like it or not.

Ginsburg is as good as gone.

    Sotomayor, diabetes, so sad.

    Soon.

We’ll just go back to having states legalizing abortion. Well, at least the states that care about women not having to go back to “back alley” abortions or to have to travel possibly several states to get one.

Women only have equal rights because men gave it to them.

    Huge mistake in retrospect.

While I can see your points, I believe there are a couple others that are of prime importance.

One- the future depends on the children of today growing up with solid parenting, in sound homes. In a great many cases of abortion, that would not be the case at all. The mother and probably the father are ill-prepared to make such a home, and even less prepared to guide a child into becoming a responsible adult. The lives of the mother and possibly father are such that the complication of adding children means that all of them- parents and children- will live in a state of poverty and dysfunction.... Too much, too soon and they aren't ready. We already have far too many children unprepared to cope with adulthood and real life, and that is bad for both them and the nation.

Second, legislation barring abortion abortion has some very negative consequences.
It forces a decision on a person, which that person must bear the total responsibility for, while those who do the forcing bear no consequence at all. This violates the fundamental principle in life that we are all responsible for ourselves, and it sets precedent for other areas in which such single-sided rules can be forced on people. IF you do not bear the consequence of a choice- you are not the person who should be making it.

Some fully believe that abortion is seen as a convenience by many. While that may be true in a few cases, the vast majority give this intense thought, weighing all the rational both ways before they come to a decision. I once knew a card-carrying bumper sticker type anti-abortion catholic, who was in the midst of divorce from a domineering husband. She left him, and he came to apartment one night and forced sex on her- resulting in pregnancy. She confided in me; ask many questions that I didn't know the answers too- but finally decided to abort the pregnancy. She said that she knew that if she had the child it would be very hard to feel right about it due to the terms of conception and the brutality of the father. She felt that any choice was a bad choice- but that if she were to be able to do the best for her other four children, that pregnancy could not continue. When you watch the pain of this soul-searching debate, you can't think of it as a casual decision, and you can't think of it as "your business". There is usually no right answer when the question of abortion is faced; just a choice of the least evil.

Some will insist the argument is that life is precious above all else. To that, I say the quality of life is precious; that life in misery is not something to be desired at all.
The same people who say that have their own rationalization. Virtually every one of them are responsible for the taking of life, everyday; but to them- "that's different".
You had steak for supper last night... bacon with breakfast, chicken sandwich for lunch. All of those required the slaughter of those animals. Is it different?
Not to the cow, the pig or the chicken... to them, their life was as valuable to them as yours is to you. Thus, these people value life they can relate to- not life in general. It's a "qualified" respect for life, that doesn't go as far as their favorite meal.

Most importantly, all of us are responsible for our own decisions. Anytime we start feeling that we have the right to dictate our decisions to others when they alone take the consequences, we have, regardless of our good intentions or assumptions of righteousness, violated the right of another person to control their own life. Bad choice.

Finally- one of the reasons abortion was made legal is that it was common anyway. However with the lack of professional assistance, many women were dying or permanently harmed in the crude processes being used. The law didn't allow abortion to start- it goes back thousands of years, regardless of the laws. The law served the purpose of saving lives, allowing new chances.

Go figure, a fascist who wants to repeal the 19th Amendment wants to infringe on women’s rights.

Why do you believe women should have less body autonomy than corpses?

No, women always had equal rights. They finally forced oppressive men to recognize them.

What a nice warm pile of flapdoodle, typical liberal rationalization and justification claptrap. Far too many humans living on earth. Ok so tell me again why we need open borders? The emancipation of women, sounds nice doesn't it? It means murdering children as a matter of convenience. Better gene pool? You want to terminate those with birth defects? OK how about crack babies or fetal alcohol syndrome or other preventable defects? Who decides and how long before it's mandated. Reduction in crime? Sounds like a Minority Report kind of scheme where you can spot a future murderer in utero. Advancement of science? Reproductive rights? How about responsibility, let's stop making bad choices other people's problems. Homosexuals, you could apply the birth defect thing to that or someone could, do you really want to go there? Wow, you even managed to insert the global warming BS into a discussion about abortion, isn't that for another conversation or are you one of those all purpose activists? Might as well bore us with some other meaningless drivel, huh? I'll just bet that those states with more liberal abortion policies experience a lot less global warming too! Roe v Wade is not settled law, in the rush to shove it down America's throat there were mistakes made, hasty, sloppy mistakes that created back doors that will be exploited and become the basis for repeal. Wasn't possible until now, one or two more conservative justices it will be impossible to stop that from happening. MAGA!!!!

I support the way we have it, I think there is no way to know "when life begins" so anything we come up with is going to be opinionated.

With that said, I think the way we have it is a safe, open and fair way to allow women to have abortions.

The only thing that needs "change" IMO is that MEN need to have the ability to have an "abortion" of sorts. The thing growing in a woman's stomache is as much a part of his body as it is hers.

The argument of a "Woman's body" is so much BS when we ignore the fact that men are involved as well.

I am sure though, that there are zero women out there who would agree with the equality to allow men an "out" that women currently enjoy.

Dont forget the satisfaction and pleasure that killing defenseless humans gives us lefties. Crushing skulls, sticking forceps into brains, decapitation and dismemberment, then we get to sell the body parts for sports car money. Feels good to be us leftists doesnt it?

What all waves of feminism have forced on women is unnatural and unsustainable.

What has it forced on women?

Forcing a woman to seek out an illegal abortion because nosey bodies want to intrude on her womb and her personal life is what is unnatural. In fact...it's perverse.

The OP wants to kill off babies to keep the population down. Of course he has already been born. Wait, maybe he will abort his life to control the population growth. Yeah, put your money where your mouth is.

So I bet you have a near copy and paste list of the exact same “important social functions” for your defenses of things like slavery, ethnic genocide, genital mutilation, ect.

No, women always had equal rights but little frightened men and a sexist society kept them for being able to exercise those rights.

Your ""Huge mistake in retrospect""" has the stench of fear about it...:)
