I'm 35 and raised in the Midwest and I've never liked football. MMA and combat sports is my thing. I've noticed a lot of guys my age and younger don't really care about the sport, and the stats are on my side.

"The NFL audience has gotten older. Consider that in 2006, the median age for an NFL viewer was 45.8. By 2012, the median had risen to 47.1; in 2013, it was 48.4 – just skirting the edge of the 18-to-49 demographic advertisers say they covet most."

I've been sensing a cultural change for years now - not just in TV or sports or movies or music. America has changed a lot. I'm thinking this just isn't the country I knew as recently as 2005. And it's not just the NFL - the NBA, and MLB are down in ratings too.

These sports are cultural flagships for America, but when each year the avg fan age keeps going up for these sports, it means a change in the culture and politics and beliefs of a people.

I have trouble calling a "combat sport" a real sport.

Team sports to me are the essence of America. And no team sport requires more actual teamwork than American rules football.

What it means is that the baby boom generation is one year older.
