California is pretty much the leader is asinine regulations, totally indifferent to the difficulties it creates for its own citizens. Many industries have left California- But now, an even stronger message.

State Farm Insurance, the nation's largest home insurer- has announced it will not longer insure California homes. Geico, another large insurer- closed all it's sales offices earlier this year. The cost of owning a home in California is already horrendous- and it will be getting much worse. The fastest-growing segment seems to be the homeless. Maybe they want that, and figure this will accelerate the trend....

You can choke anything to death with enough regulations. Wondering how far the lunacy will go before the revolt- and if it will spread like some other social diseases have.

Sounds a lot like Florida... Except here the insurance companies that have pulled out, and have announced they will be pulling out (like State Farm, BTW) would have LOVED it if there had been tons more regulations back when there was still time to do something to revert Climate Change. Now they're paying the price. As are homeowners who have seen their insurance double in the last year and expect it to double again in the next year IF they can even GET insurance.

 

You claim you researched the validity of your argument. Request you show me the data that proves man made climate change caused the insurance costs to go up in Florida.

California wants people dependent on the government for their insurance. That equals more control.

 

My understanding is that State Farm is leaving for two reasons. To cut their losses due to rebuilding costs, estimated at the high end to be $500 a foot, and fire casualties. I'm still insured by State Farm and am in a fire zone and we own a high dollar home. Homes in CA. have always been expensive. Almost 365 days of mild weather and sunshine is the reason.

 

I did not see either Florida or insurance mentioned.

 

Of all the reasons "climate change" is the most ridiculous. Problem there is similar to here in California - property values are so inflated that EVEN one fire/hurricane can run up claims into the billions which in turn drives up premiums to the point people can't afford them.

 

Did you see "Global" anywhere? That does include Florida. AND, believe it or not (just to stay on topic)... California. (Gasp!)

The relationship between the hurricanes (as well as droughts and floods, in the case of California), which ARE profusely mentioned there, with insurance can be found in any insurance website. Can't do all the work for you. Shake a leg, young man!

 

It sure is! It's the most ridiculous because it was the most preventable 20 years ago. What is MORE ridiculous is that this is only going to get worse and, believe it or not, there are STILL science denialists who don't want us to do what we can to mitigate the effects.

 

All State has now joined the ban on new home insurance there. Depending on the company- some say wildfires and high cost, but that's little different than insuring Chevy's and Ferraris; the premiums match the risk. State Farm didn't mention that, but said excessive regulation makes it so difficult and hazardous to do business there, that they chose to pull out.

I've never lived there, just visited. I can understand the appeal of the geography and weather- but I can't understand how its governance can be so detached from the welfare and finances of the citizens.

There is no evidence that the strength or number of tropical storms has gone up. There has been an increase in the number reported because of technology.

 

So many cheap cabins up in the woods that are at risk of burning down every year, that's what I think.

You lose at "denialist". There are few if any that deny climate is changing; Some of us actually have the math and science background to read data and see it's not changing fast, nor is there any "disaster" on the horizon. We caught on when a series of "warnings" from 2000 or even earlier failed to materializes and are smart enough to know that " . . . and THIS TIME we really mean it". isn't science.

Science is one of the most over worked words in the English dictionary. All too many, such as you, act like science is some magic potion which can never be wrong. Questioning aspects of science is not being a denialist. In fact, questioning, is the very essence of science. This is especially true in immature sciences like climate change. There are more unknowns than knowns and we don't even know what we don't know. The reason being the complexity of the issue. Virtually every event and object in this universe has some effect on our climate. Some negligible, and some has a massive effect.

 

I live in Florida and today I got a text from State Farm announcing that my insurance on my home was increasing. There was no mention they were leaving Florida.

 

See, you got off the rails from the start. I don't deny science at all. Part of which is observing the repeated prediction failures science has produced. I've probably spent more time in the last two years actually studying the science than you have being woke.

I have a degree in Epistemology. I could spend a year teaching you the strengths and weaknesses of science, and you would not have even started to understand how it works.

 

I have probably had more courses in physics, chemistry and math than you have ever dreamed about. That plus forty years experience in a number of science professions says you are wrong.

Why in the world would anybody observe the failures? If you want to learn science, you learn from the successes. AGW is one of the greatest successes of Science. Equal to Quantum Mechanics, Evolution, Gravity Theory, Relativity Theory,... you know... the big ones! Not perfect, of course. Scientists did underestimate the impact of AGW a bit. It turned out to be way worse way sooner than expected.

Anyway... don't bother. There is a whole forum to discuss Climate Change Science. This one is about how it's impact (which you say you don't deny) is moving Insurance Companies away from certain states... And, if we don't take mitigation efforts seriously, eventually it will be drive them out of ALL States.

Absolutely, I have met PHDs that were clueless. Education does not necessarily mean much. It is what you do with that education which counts. That means actually doing it and not just watching scientists do it.
