The U.S. should never have been shutdown.

People panicked over a rarely lethal virus. Same panicky freakout Americans routinely get. The same when a couple of deaths from shark attacks makes the news for weeks on end.

I believe President Donald Trump did as much to respond to the Virus as he could under current political conditions. I don't fault him for that.

But I think he and about 35 governors have done way too much to respond to the virus.

Based on the average age of those who have died (80 year olds) and where (nursing homes and similar facilities) the U.S. should've simply focused its medical resources on nursing homes and similar facilities and simply issued a general warning to the rest of the population.

Instead you had things happen like the NCAA and NBA panicking and calling off the basketball seasons and playoff which prompted this ridiculous panicked reaction throught he entire economy.

And it wasn't worth it. We could've come out ahead in terms of lives lost and way ahead with the damage to the economy.

 

We'll have a test case to that with what is happening in Brazil and Russia. They chose to ignore the virus, we'll
see how that goes. Right now, both are having problems with providing medical care with the spike that is
going on. We can compare that to the economies of New Zealand and South Korea, they had total shut-downs.
We'll know later this summer how it goes.

We will definitely wind up with well over 100,000 deaths from this virus, and apparently many if not all of those who have been cured have suffered irreparable long term damage to their bodies.

It was a huge over reaction to shut it all down like they did. We would have been better served to address and protect those most vulnerable while letting others keep the economy running. It would have been more effective and a hell of a lot less damaging to the economy and to the majority people which this virus does not effect.

Let's hope if round 2 occurs we do not make the same mistake.

 

Where is that info coming from? Seems a like a wee bit of a stretch to predict that since we have no ideal of the long term effects at this point. And by wee bit I mean a hell of a stretch.....

 

They will ultimately do better than most.. Their herd immunity will prevent future pandemics.

While places that went into heavy quarantine will be forced to do so repeatedly, every year.....for ever.

South Korea didn't have a total shutdown and what they did do was less draconian than the US

The country over reacted with this total shutdown. We could have had fewer deaths with a more focused reaction and more tactical use of resources. We went shotgun and should have went rifle.

 

Namely - Ramp up and approve testing in late January, early Februrary.

 

Sweden never shut down, now its death rate AND its economy are worse than its neighbors

 

It is impossible to have a strong economy when millions of sane and rational people are going to refuse to get things like haircuts or attend sporting events while a deadly and novel virus kills several thousand Americans a day.

 

A) That method is the official policy of the CDC, and
B) Would you rather pretend that these people didn't have covid just because they weren't tested?

 

I agree. We should have been doing way more testing much earlier, should have tested everyone coming in from outside the country, and should have quarantined everyone who tested positive. That's basically what South Korea and Taiwan did, and it worked out great for them.

Too bad leadership wasn't on the ball. If we can get testing ramped up before the second wave, we may be able to avoid a second shutdown and/or another round of 80k+ dead bodies.

 

Sweden is doing terribly.

Sweden : 3040 deaths, 301 deaths/million

Compare to their neigbours with similar geography and population spread:
Finland: 255 deaths. 46 deaths/million
Norway: 217 deaths, 40 deaths/million

 

Sweden will only do better if, one, no vaccine or antiviral is found, and two, if the virus does not mutate. Both unlikely. Sweden's approach compared to it's close neighbours is not working out

 

We'll hit 100K deaths in less than a couple of weeks. With the rate climbing to 3000 deaths per day shortly, we may be lucky to keep it under half a million this year.

 

Sweden isn't doing terribly, they have fewer deaths per million than Spain, Italy, the UK, France and the Netherlands, which did lockdown, and not much worse than the US. They are probably ahead of everybody in achieving herd immunity.

 

Not true, why did that WHO official recently call Sweden a 'model'? There is no guarantee a vaccine will be found, we don't have one for HIV or SARS, and there has never been a vaccine for a coronavirus.

I've heard speculation the virus may mutate into a weaker form, and that is how many viruses die out.
