Yes. We should ignore female genital mutilation and honor killings from the islamic communities just because some of us enjoy the same food.

You're really thinking that mixing a bunch of european culture is anything "multicultural" ?

We haven’t been this divided since Vietnam. But Vietnam was temporary. Our left-right divide today is permanent.

Multiculturalism has failed because the left wants it to fail. They want to keep the U.S. divided. It’s a key tenet of socialism: divide and conquer. The last thing the left wants is complete assimilation into a melting pot that shares traditional American values. That would be a leftist’s hell.

I think we are becoming almost as divided as America was during the Civil War

What a crock. That's not what the Maori and Aborigines would say.

The ignorance expressed in such a small paragraph is staggering. I mean... where would i even begin? It's amazing that somebody would actually believe that "being white" is a culture. Now, I'm not saying that that makes you a racist. But it does tell us that the sources from which you get this information most definitely are racist

You're not understanding. It's Dr. Putnam's own study that contradicts the conclusion you are relying on.

That would be the contrary to Dr Putnam's conclusion. Which are that it's diversity itself, not prejudice, what stifles civic health. That is your conclusion. But the answer to your question is that that cannot be concluded from this or any other study. But if it could, that would mean that your conclusion is that we should make America a hispanic-only country.

The conclusion you expressed. It is not supported by the data.

No. The study says nothing with monocultural societies. It would seem to find that there is a negative correlation between diversity and several factors that impact trust and social capital. But a new study finds that, using Putnam's own data, that correlation cannot be attributed to diversity.. But rather to other factors such as prejudice, socio-economic factors, residential stability, etc.

    http://static1.squarespace.com/stat...calBaldassarri_HeterogeneityTrust_AJS2015.pdf

I have never even known of the existence of a monocultural community in the United States. Much less lived in one. I don't even know what a "monocultural society" is. Maybe some far away Indian tribe that lives isolated? Is that what you are referring to? I have seen documentaries of tribes in Africa that have lived almost completely isolated from the outside world for centuries. I guess you could call that "monocultural". Have you ever been to one of those?

First of all, multiculturalism is not the same as diversity. Second, Dr Putnam does not believe that his study is an indictment of multiculturalism or even of diversity. As a matter of fact, he filed a brief in a court case denouncing an attempt to use his study to claim this one year after his study was published.

There is no such thing as "races".

And multi-cultures exist, whether you believe they "should" or "should not". The question is if we should incentivate being more. And, of course, there should definitely be more. Cultural diversity makes us intellectually richer and fuels progress in all areas: technology, Science, Arts, ...

I think there is a huge misconception on the right about wht multi-culturalism means (as if there weren't about everything else). When you hear John Wayne is after some "bad hombres", or when you eat a Pizza, or even use a computer.... there's already multiculturalism, right there. Only way conceivable you could have ONE culture, would be one of those tribes you sometimes see on NetGeo that have lived almost isolated, without much contact with the outside world in centuries... You might be very happy there....

Logic tells me that multiculturalism is a negative for any society. Where has it really improved things? Anywhere?

Europe had and has a distinct and fairly well defined culture. Europe is white. Hence it makes sense to speak of white culture. I would suggest that it is willful ignorance on your part. I would bet that you are not very well versed in European history and culture for you to suggest otherwise.

Prejudice is the result of diversity, quite obviously. If there were no diversity there would be nothing to be prejudiced about. Every attempt to increase diversity has resulted in divisiveness.

I have explained it oh... so many times... on this forum. Racism is the systematic oppression by the dominating (self-identified) ethnic group over other ethnic groups. For example, the dominating ethnic group in our country is the white population.

Not more temporary than Trump. But what does that have to do with multiculturalism?

Except that whites are not responsible for black failure and poverty

Which is the excuse liberals cling to

It does not have a well defined culture. It doesn't even have a well defined language. Ughh... Forget it! Too much nonsense. And so out of topic.

You're all over the map. Started with civic health, and now you are looking to justify prejudice. Which has nothing to do with the study you cited. And then you say that Dr. Putnam agrees, and then he doesn't. And, of course, the Liberal Conspiracy Theory, could not be lacking......

I say again: Too much nonsense.....

Multiculturalism has divided the nation into tribes. We won't be united again until we go back to the melting pot.

It may be the case that you couldn't distinguish between a European and Chinese cultural artifact like a paining or a song, but most educated people can.

You were the one who brought up prejudice. I merely responded.

    I accept your capitulation.

Quote, please. Of a liberal. Not of Sean Hannity or one of those right-wing nuts, who are the only ones I've heard repeating that idiotic statement.

It would seem that Aussies treat the Aborigines about the same as we treat our Native Americans.

Man... you're on a trip! Multiculturism divides us into two tribes: racists, and normal people. But the racists feel empowered only because Trump is in power. Once he's gone, they go back in the closet. Where they belong. And we'll be more united than we ever were before when we are able to objectively look back at what the orange idiot got such a large part of our people into. Out of horror that we might ever repeat it.

And you can't distinguish between a German and an Italian Opera? Or a Spanish and Turkish dance? Or a French and a Greek dish?...Or how about between the British and the Russian alphabet?

Of course I can distinguish between them. But I can also note similarities in the Operas. They both use the same instruments in the orchestra, both use diatonic scales and are obviously related. Chinese opera is quite different and obviously alien and, actually, it hurts my ears. For instance:

(Did you know that the Russian alphabet was invented by a Greek monk so they could translate the Bible into Russian? More to show the inter-relatedness of European culture. The superficial difference in alphabet is overwhelmed by the shared foundational text.) There is a reason we have the category of Western Civilization because the white peoples of Europe have deep cultural bonds which distinguishes them from other civilizations. There are countless examples of this, for instance mathematics. Way back in the 17th C. calculus was discovered twice at almost the same time by Newton, an Englishman and Liebnitz, a German. That is because the different European countries were in contact with each other the various cultures informed each other to form a distinct civilization.

I don't think the differences between French and Greek food overwhelms the common bonds of philosophy which unites the Greeks and the French.

There is a deep project to erase white people characterized by so-called whiteness studies. You, for some reason, have signed onto this project. I have not. You want to dilute and define away Western Civilization. I do not.

No, multiculturalism is the "salad bowl" concept, where we're all separate and different, but we just occupy the same space.

Prior to multiculturalism, we had the "melting pot". And it worked.
