There's a growing movement in America to "abolish the police"

    Would the Left's alternative be realistic? Is there another political agenda here? Should it be against the law for an officer to shoot a civilian?

    The big puzzle to me is how much they hate police, but love more government control and keep passing more laws.

    This whole thing reminds me of Chairman Mao's Cultural Revolution where he stirred up anarchy to drum up supporters and consolidate his own power. The end goal, of course, was anything but anarchy/liberalism, as under his rule China was turned into a police state.

    The Soviet Union as well abandoned using the word "police" because it was seen as too oppressive and reminiscent of oppression under the former capitalist/tsarist system, even though their own police forces were far worse.
