I didn't think there were many depths that Venezuela could sink to that would surprise me at this point, but surprise me they did. One of their navy's patrol boats managed to sink itself by ramming a cruise ship - a cruise ship with a reinforced, ice-rated hull. Oops! (side note: if I were the captain of the cruise ship, I'd totally paint a silhouette of the patrol boat on my hull)

At first, I figured it was simple piracy, something like a western hemisphere version of Somalia, but with some official sanction from the socialist government. The last few paragraphs of the article suggest that it may be tied to international disputes with Portugal, the cruise ship's flag state, which makes this more like an incident of Clausewitz "politics by other means", albeit one managed particularly incompetently by the Venezuelan "navy".

 

From what I read, that cruise ship was trafficking militants into Venezuela.

Not that many navies could "take down" a Cruise ship by ramming it, especially one with an icebreaker hull. Cruise ships are among the biggest things afloat.

Yes it had guns and fired at the cruise. The Resolute is not a very large cruise it has 260 or so cabins and was on the way to a maintenance harbor for routine engine maintenance.
The Venezuelan ship was a modern frigate, built in Spain.
