During his speech, Trump said the following: I happened to catch Michael Savage on his radio show going off on this legislation. He drew a parallel to Jerry Brown, whose prison reforms have turned felons out on the street and caused California crime rate to skyrocket. He described gangs hitting retail establishments with bags they stuff with stolen goods. However, I don't get the feeling Trump is aiming this legislation at the dangerous ones. He specifically says he will keep the dangerous ones off our streets. Trump seems to be listening to behavioral health leaders and placing faith in their evidence-based practices of teaching life skills to those who can show positive outcomes. I'm not against it; but I lament the fact that we have many many good people who would like that same attention and a leg up. They will not get it unless they land in jail first. I really do wish the welfare of the law-abiding working class was paramount.
Trump’s intentions won’t get companies to hire felons and other criminals. Hell, people can’t get jobs or keep them if they’re Trump supporters.
Prisoner reform is a tall order. It should be the objective of the criminal justice system. The justice system should not only be used to punish, but to reform. The habits and tendencies of people are hard to break, but having additional hurdles for people who are legitimately trying to change their lives hurts the odds of people changing those habits. Everyone wants less crime, and reforming criminals will reduce crime, in addition to, add productive members to society.
This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Of course prisons are there to punish, these people caused harm and you don't get a free pass for that. So I guy rapes a woman and you don't want to punish him, you want to help him become better? Bet that makes the woman feel so special.
I didn't say that at all. I said that prison are there to punish, but they are also there to reform. Whether or not you reform someone has nothing to do when they get released. The reform part is after they get out, not a reduction in sentence.
I've heard it said that Nevada prisons do so well with skill training that almost all the welders and upholsterers are reformed prisoners. Some companies only hire ex-prisoners because they are both skilled and cheap. I've never investigated the veracity of those statements. Nevada also uses low-risk prisoners to work in prison industry making mattresses, doing auto body work, to get out and clear the forest understory to prevent forest fires, and tame the wild horses for resale.
Trumps reform bill does not pertain to rapists or violent criminals or felons. It is aimed at low-risk people who need a second chance. Personally, I don't think of prison as a way to punish, but to cull. The violent criminals we don't need. It's not pc to shoot them against the wall, so prison keeps them safely out of our society. That's how it is supposed to work, anyway -- make your world safe and secure.
This won't sit well with the private prison owners. On the surface, it seems a good idea. Will ponder it more. It won't pass, though. The lawyers for private prisons are already working with K street on this. Bet that.
