Wrong. The whole idea of a dictionary is to standardize word spelling and pronunciation. While common word definitions are included in dictionaries, that does not make a dictionary into the sole arbiter of a word definition. Words are defined by people, by philosophy, by logic, by engineering, etc... I've already provided my reasoning for the definition of the word 'fact'.

Sort of. It is not the usage itself that determines meaning, but rather the philosophy/reasoning behind the usage. Any usage that can be rationalized is valid. Some usage can be better rationalized than other usage. Word definitions that cannot be rationalized remain as empty meaningless buzzwords.

    No, that is a measurement.

    It fits perfectly.

I know full well how science works.

    1) That's not what I said, read it again.

    2) And having misread what I said, you go on to screw up meaning. Usage determines meaning, but only in certain contexts. There is no rationalisation, it's what people do.

    3) You're funny. You are also playing word games. So I am going to back the truck up, again. Scientists have little use for formal logic. All knowledge in science is conditional, a genius can walk in at any time and tip the table over. That is reflected in modern philosophy of science, which explicitly avoids traditional approaches. I've gone over this before. In logic, something is true forever. In science, it's true til tuesday, or wednesday...

It's exactly what you said, and I responded accordingly.

I misread nothing. It is the reasoning behind the usage that determines meaning, not the usage itself. I can use the word 'splattamole' all day long, but unless I provide a definition for that word (and the reasoning behind that definition), it remains a meaningless word.

No I'm not; I'm simply being precise.

Science makes use of formal logic. It is also known as testing the internal consistency of a theory.

That's not what we're talking about.

You remind me of the blind men and the elephant. Put in the time or stop pretending.

Anything to divert attention from Trump and his irrational, hysterical outbursts such as his whining "Pathetic!" at his Coronavirus Response Coordinator for acknowledging that the pandemic that Trump insisted would just "go away" is now “extraordinarily widespread.”

Attempted diversions abound. The record remains.

Trump has no medical experience and doctors have no economic experience. Everybody views things through their own lens. Bound to happen.

May I quote your "Dictionaries do not define words" in my signature?

Do whatever you wish with that.

Dictionaries do not define words (people define words). The purpose of dictionaries is to standardize spelling and pronunciation of words. No dictionary is the "sole arbiter" over any word definition...
