Trump admits it. He lied about Covid, so as to not get the American people worried, so that his poll numbers would stay up and he wouldn't have a crisis during his administration. he feared a crisis would hurt his re-election chances. So he made believe Covid was a hoax...even though he knew it was very real and deadly!!!

    https://www.newsweek.com/tucker-carlson-lindsey-graham-fox-news-donald-trump-bob-woodward-1530864

"In a recording released by the Washington Post journalist, Trump said: "I wanted to, I wanted to always play it down. I still like playing it down, because I don't want to create a panic."

this is simply unacceptable. President needs to be honest with the American people regarding a health crisis, so that more people dont die!!!

and he did it for political reasons. truly terrible.

I think things get a little muddy when we try to attach intention to his statements. The tapes, without interpretation, tell us what we need to know. Now it is up to people to decide if it is an appropriate decision by a POTUS - to intentionally mislead in order to avoid panic.

For me, I don't believe that a public should be misinformed. Panic can be deadly, sure, but the virus was/is deadly. And the American people are not children - we deserve to know the truth. It wasn't classified information, so we should have been told the truth.

And before people jump on the 'experts changed their views several times' train, I'm referring specifically to the Woodward interview recording that the OP provides.

The People have the RIGHT to know the truth about a virus that spreads very easily.

his "concern about a panic", led to people thinking the virus was a hoax, therefore they did not pay attention to safety rules and warnings.

Trump has blood on his hands.

I am still looking for where he admitted to lying?

I am going to have to go with the experts again here...and I suggest the left start actually listening to them

"I didn't see any discrepancies between what he told us and what we told him and what he ultimately came out publicly and said," Fauci, the country's top infectious diseases expert and head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said.

"He really didn't say anything different than we discussed when we were with him," Fauci said.

He knew that "panic", or lets put it realistically, a healthy fear of the virus, would hurt his re-election success. Since that's the only thing he cares about, I think his intentions are pretty clear.

Trump made a judgment call that panic was worse than Covid itself. It's a matter of opinion and there's no right or wrong answer here.
What is right is as Trump tried to tamp down panic he shutdown travel from China first and then Europe which democrats at the time opposed.
It also interesting to look at American behavior as the death toll mounted. American response was largely "party on Wayne" and still is today.
Lesson there is if Trump had initially said be very afraid and hide in your homes people wouldn't have done it anyway.

    1st off, he never "lied".
2nd, he did "downplay" it. I knew he was right form his very first public address about it and IMO, that wasn't not a good move for him to do.
3rd, the only person with "blood on their hands" is Governor Cuomo who slapped a bunch of Rona having elderlies with non-rona having elderlies which = lots of dead seniors

Although I wouldn't agree, I could at least understand Trump's desire to quell panic if he hadn't stirred it so many times before and since.

Thank you Mr. President for not panicking the weak minded more than they already are. You probably saved hundreds of thousands of them from being trampled in the streets while running with around their hair on fire.
Lord only knows how many more "wear your friggin' mask" OP's we would have had to endure.

telling The People that suddenly the virus will just vanish, wasn't very Presidential.

    or honest.

referring to the virus as a hoax, within any context, was 100% wrong.

there are people that believe the virus is a hoax and no one is dying, thanks to Trump's lies.

"Admitted' to lying? That's funny! Trump will tell you that it's day and that it's night in the same sentence, and he won't admit either one is a lie because he knows his loyalists will find a way to argue that both are true at the same time.

It's the President's intention not to create panic. If there is a fire in the theatre, yelling fire would create a panic. Letting people know that the fire is under control would allow people to carry on and enjoy the show that they paid for and the producers worked hard on.

Strange that you would accuse Trump of lying about COVID when the entire COVID hysteria itself is based on nothing but lies.

The truth about coronavirus is that it's not a serious danger to society. Those claiming otherwise are the real liars.

    Talk about irony.

The panic surrounding novel coronavirus (although it's not really that novel anymore) was induced artificially by liberal politicians and journalists for purely political purposes. The idea that Nancy Pelosi and Chris Cuomo have been promoting virus hysteria nonstop because they actually care about people is beyond laughable. If the liberal media hadn't told you to be scared, you wouldn't even know this virus existed. That's how irrelevant it actually is.

Most of the deaths attributed to COVID in New York were probably caused by overreliance on ventilators and acute social isolation in nursing home patients. There is a mountain of evidence showing that social isolation significantly increases mortality in nursing home patients because they lose the will to live and their immune systems shut down. The lockdowns are killing far more people than the virus.

And forcing a radical restructuring on society because of a virus that poses zero threat to the general populace is 1,000,000% wrong.

Whatever Trump's lies, they absolutely pale in comparison to the lies told by COVID alarmists. The damage done to society by these deranged lockdowns is almost incalculable.

    ((((((Sigh))))

This is where a GOOD leader calls in experts because this is not the first pandemic ever. The “shutdown of travel from China was a joke because it only stopped direct flights

Which experts? The cherry-picked liberal experts who are chasing prestige and notoriety? Experts like Fauci, who told everyone not to worry about the virus and that there was no reason to wear a mask?

Trying to avoid a mass public panic is a part of a President's job. I've said this from day one when lefties kept saying that he was downplaying things while at the same time Democrats were telling people to go to China Town and calling Trump xenophobic for closing down traffic from China.
