If there was ever any doubt about the irresponsibility and stupidity of Donald J Trump, this has to be yet another prime piece of evidence.

Once again, Trump goes out of the way to alienate and anger our most trusted allies, while giving comfort and encouragement to our rivals. Putin could not have asked for more!

It’s a remarkable change of tune for the United States. U.S. officials worked closely with G-7 negotiators for days on the communique, and other nations took pains to ensure that Trump would sign on, despite deep disagreements on trade.

Trump’s decision is likely to further divide the U.S. from its G-7 allies, who have long been skeptical of the president and have publicly and privately expressed deep frustration with Trump’s flippant comments and desire to overhaul their trade policies."

The EU has a 14.5% tariff on American goods, but we have a 2.5% tariff on European goods? WTF? The Europeans aren't playing nice. This isn't 1946. The Europeans don't need help rebuilding from the Second World War anymore.

Trump is proposing no tariffs at all - for any country. Now that's free trade. Let's see how the spoiled Europeans react.

Why not no tariffs at all between canada, the euros and United States on products made in those countries?

 

Leftists don't want zero tariffs for two reasons:

1) High European tariffs punish the U.S., and they hate the U.S.
2) No tariffs mean lower tax revenue. Tax revenue is like oxygen for leftists.

Don't insult our intelligence by referring to Trump's meaningless throwaway statements as if they mean something. Trump has imposed a 25% tarriff on steel imports from the EU. I realize that folks like you think television is real, and that Trump's empty and self contradictory statements actually mean something. But Trump standing in front of a television camera and directly contradicting his own positions does not make for anything other than more distrust and doubts about the mental fitness and competence of the man child.

Oh, and you may be shallow enough to think that this is all a big game about right and left, but it is not.

All throughout my life, the United States has been the most powerful nation in the world, not just because we spent a lot of money on weapons, but because of our economic strength and the fact that we led a coalition of Western powers to victory in WWII and held and grew that coalitition to de facto world leadership (with the United States at the top).

We didn't always get our way all the time. But we were always first among equals on world leadership.

Donald Trump has appointed himself to the role of one man wrecking crew, determined through insults, slight, and irrational behavior, to undermine the world order that has prevailed throughout the lifetimes of every person on this forum.

Trump and his followers seem to think that all this self destructive drama, the insults, the reversal, and the bad faith won't cost us anything. That, no matter how boorish, insulting or belligerant the American President behaves, that somehow the American Century will continue unaffected.

It won't.

Already, the United States has set back its relationships with its closest allies to a level not seen since the 1930's.

The allies we built in Asia after the War don't trust us either, as Trump has deployed the same strategy there as well, flattering and obsequious praise of dangerous enemies and insults and bullying of our allies.

This isn't just about tarriff rates. If you think it's that simple, you either are not paying attention, or you don't understand politics.

Trump is sitting our nation back generations on the world stage, and is going to make it very hard for his successors to be able to trade on the level of trust and confidence in American leadership that every President has relied on since 1945.

Champagne corks popped in the Duma in Moscow the day Trump was elected. So far, they could not have wished for a more useful idiot.

Free trade agreements are desirable, if the tariffs are equal or nonexistent. But a situation where one party (Europe) has a tariff almost six times higher than the other (the U.S.) is not free.

 

We have tighter restrictions on EU products overall.

Actually it is excellent that you should use the photograph of the woman who has deliberately all but destroyed both Germany and much of Europe by demanding that everyone have open borders in regards to Islamic immigrants from war torn nations; immigrants whom immediately began robbing and mugging and raping Europeans at will while Merkel watched with a dumbfounded look on her LEFTIST face.

Naturally the Left worships her just as they worshiped Obama as president; Obama who not only would cheerfully have done exactly the same thing to the U.S.A. but tried like hell to make it happen. Trump has imposed high tariffs as a bargaining chip to get others to the table. The current trade deals are stacked against the U.S. with tariffs on American goods entering Europe almost six times higher than European goods entering the U.S.

 

Forgive these leftists; since all they really understand about economics is that by magic money comes into the treasury and then their 'job' is to spend every bit of it as fast as possible. To the average leftist this IS . . . economics.

 

In light of the libs being on record that they are praying for a recession and the failure of Trump's negotiation with North Korea, that they actually want the US to continue being screwed on trade by allies and foes alike for decades to come is merely par for the course.
