Trump speaking today at 10:40 AM outside the Oval Office: "The tariffs are hurting China very badly ... We're having many billions of dollars pour into our treasury. We've never had that before with China."

Fer crissake, those billions of dollars are paid by American consumers.

Is Trump clueless or is he pulling the wool over his followers' eyes? I'll go with the latter.

You don't need to look further than China's stock market to see tariffs are hurting them.

Deranged. The guy won't even admit his true height. He wants us to believe he is 6' 3", but here he is next to Jeb Bush, who happens to be 6' 3"...

I'm sure he is pleased, though, to have people fighting and arguing over whether his ridiculous lies are truthful rather than arguing over real controversies. Every stupid lie he tells is another smokescreen to obscure any real controversy, such as his abuses of presidential power and his resounding defeats in Congress and the Courts, his quarter-assed foreign and domestic policies that range from ineffective to disastrous, and so on.

They are hurting America too. But Trump is making sure to bribe the people being hurt so they’ll vote for him again.

He is just using the principle, tariffs, set up at the founding of our nation. See, back then we knew it was better for america and americans if we were as self sustaining as possible, not dependent upon other nations and could make what we consume, here at home, employing our own citizens. And in order to industrialize america, we needed to protect american business and workers from extraordinary cheap labor, from the world's poor.

And if a service sector based economy was as good for a people and a nation as a manufacturing based economy, that would have been chosen over industrialization.

If our politicians were to represent the best self interests of the american people, instead of those they currently represent, they would be economic nationalists...which is a term that basically means, our representatives see their own citizens as to be represented first and foremost.

The most important thing is not maximization of profit by keeping wages lower. And yet that is what drives what is called globalism. So of course globalists hate tariffs. ha ha

Yeah, it totally has nothing to do with the fact that the wealthy oligarchs who owned the means of production were the only ones who were allowed to vote at the time...

Then he should consider that at the founding of this country, the economy was nearly all farm-based. Their perspective on things is based on the fact that the industrialists were people who had little workshops and produced at local levels.

    Service sector? In 1780-90s?
If maximizing profits by keeping wages lower is not important, then why was did people like Carnegie force workers to take pay cuts? He had a virtual monopoly on the steel industry and had already made more more money than he could spend in one lifetime. Whether on a global or national scale, profit is the key motivator, and that has always meant that wages are in the crosshairs.

Businesses that sell you stuff or services buy and use Chinese goods. You may not buy Chinese goods yourself, but businesses have employees using iphones and other computer equipment made in China.

My contribution to that will still not come anywhere close to $2400 per year. Maybe someone does, but most do not.

We had nearly all the natural resources we needed in 1790 to industrialize. That isn't the case today where we have to sell into world markets to get raw materials we require.

We had a trade deficit for much of out first century as we industrialized, then we had a trade surplus for most of a century when we were largely self-sufficient in natural resources, and now we're having to bid for resources on world markets. We can no longer hide behind s tariff wall.

We're richer selling services overseas on jobs that pay $20/hour than putting those same people in factory jobs that pay $1/hour.
What do you think we should do? Trade service sector jobs paying $20/hour for manufacturing jobs Vietnamese will do for $1/hour? We have full employment now.
If we try to hide behind a tariff wall, we'll face their tariffs and have a hard time selling goods and services to them, and thus difficulty getting foreign exchange to buy the things we need from overseas.

The days of high-wage, low-skill factory jobs are over. The few manufacturing jobs coming back our way are high-skill jobs that largely bypass older workers with outdated and/or limited skills.

What do we do with a 35-year-old with a family, few skills, and a lousy basic education? I taught computer skills to adults who were weak in reading and math. They struggled.

I didn’t need to do this:’ Trump just kneecapped his own case for a ‘national emergency’

    Excerpt:
He called reports showing the vast majority of drugs come through ports of entry, where a wall wouldn’t matter, a “lie.” Of data that show undocumented immigrants commit less crime than native-born Americans, Trump told the reporter, “You don’t really believe that stat, do you?” Of data showing the number of drug deaths in the United States, Trump read it and said the number was “ridiculously low.”
Trump has previously exaggerated or misstated such facts, but he has yet to be confronted about it because he rarely answers questions. And on Friday, he made clear he simply doesn’t believe them — that his own view of what’s happening on the border is not based upon his own administration’s and other authoritative data.
None of this might ultimately matter in the legal fight to come. Presidents have certain authorities, and the courts (potentially the Supreme Court, in this case) seem more likely to deal with the law and facts on the ground rather than Trump’s comments about all of it.
We’ll see if Trump’s expressed motivations have any bearing; they may not.
But politically speaking, Trump just made it much more difficult for his supporters to agree with him that this is truly an emergency — which was already pretty difficult.

It's hard to know about the hidden costs. If you have a high income and even reasonably high sprnding, it may be difficult to keep your indiect spending on Chinese goods under $2400.

newsflash, the waltons ain't consumers... they're anti-american greed mongors that destroyed american businesses, such as rubbermaid (which is now in name only), look up their history, you'll see how many american jobs they eliminated, and they practically invented 'corporate welfare' limited employee hours so the gov(aka, taxpayers) has to provide benefits... they did all this with a smile, all the while stabbing americans in the back...
