Exactly, which is what this forum is about, 99% speculation.

I'm talking about how the Founding Fathers viewed themselves not how misguided people view them today. The very idea that the people could govern themselves was seen as the height of radical naivete in their day

I've never yet dealt with a white racist who was not also a white supremacist. The races view each other in the context of struggle, first and foremost to them. Anyone such as you describe would be a race traitor of the first water in their eyes.

Ancient Rome was a class-based oligarchy until the Emperor took over and appointed his horse to the Senate to show what he really thought of them. Ancient Athens was pretty much the same with the classes only slightly less closed and then Philip ended that anyway. There were Republics, but they were rarities and not at all what we would call in anyways "free". The main and major sort of government was Monarchy with a KIng and nobility ruling over a vast and truly subject populace. The "people" were mostly seen as a farmer sees his herds. Their welfare and moods were the warp and weft of the better classes existence but the idea that they should be consulted as to the running of the farm was beyond ridiculous

America was something new in its age and we were the major really subversive power in the world for nearly the whole of the next century. Our protective big brother with a foot in both systems, a vast area with more than enough room for all of Europe's growing problems, and a position effectively off beyond Mars until the 1860s were all that saved us

"Their day" was the Enlightenment, not 400 BC nor the 13th century.

My brother in law routinely refers to my sisters students ( shes a high school art teacher in FL ) as a bunch of little nig*ers. He believes that the only good muslim ( of ANY kind ) is a dead one. Hes polite and hides his views in public, and would never say such a thing in the general public. But behind closed doors, hes not the person he puts forth in public.

Holiday dinners at my sisters are rough to say the least.

If your brother in law is polite in public, how is he a problem for the nation?

I guess I got confused when you wrote "I think most modern people would have viewed the Founding Fathers as rather SJWs, and rather "woke"sorts too"

You have to be careful not to listen to me. You all say I don't know what I'm talking about yet you hold me to it.

I mean that the Founding Fathers were very much like the people you most criticize

Racists can be any color/race/nationality. White supremacists believe ONLY whites should be in power, all others are lesser. Bigots don't necessarily think they are better then everybody else, they just hate everybody else.

When those that have an overwhelming need to throw terms and labels around to make people feel guilty for being born with a certain skin color, and that name/label is no longer effective (no long an itch) they find a new one one to try and beat people over the head with.

Pointing out one loon that goes off the farm and kills a bunch of people - does not make "white supremacy" some vast problem in this nation.

    Tucker is correct.

    Every so often on here I feel very much like young lady in this upcoming movee.;

    "Gentlemen, might we be civil?"

Nobody's trying to make anyone feel ashamed of anything, particularly your skin color, at least nobody on this side. What was done in the past was in the past.

Nobody's accusing YOU of doing anything

OTOH what was done in the past DID happen and it DOES still have its effects in the present, are you disputing that?

I must beg your indulgence to some digression here becuase this is where it gets really hard for me to argue with what seem to be White Supremacists, even though I am white myself. White Supremacists come on with this proposal to all other races of "You're a waste of skin. The only thing you're fit for is to be my chattel slave and that's only until I decide to kill you and yours."

"Now come, let us reason together" doesn't really seem like any sort of logical next step to me and I just can't feature how anyone would reasonably propose it given the circumstance, can you ?

I dispute that, some were slaveholders, yes, but given the times (and we ALWAYS must allow for that and I have never said otherwise, nor does any reasonable person) that is not the same thing

Real White Supremacists would not write "All men are created equal" as among the initial words of their overall Credo

I am usually quite civil. My defenses go way up with some posters here from both sides.

I have been called a racist, a White Supremacist, and quite a few other things, because I don't agree with some statements that put forth the idea that everyone is innately racist, or have benefitted from 'white privilege', or even don't know what it's like to be discriminated against. I won't claim I know everything a Black person may have gone through, but I do know what it's like to be discriminated against, treated as a 'lesser' human or be held accountable for actions committed prior to my existence and out of my control. Yet I still get labeled by my skin color.

So yes, I have been accused. And when explanations are provided, they are tossed aside as an excuse, all the racists say that, and just as you have issues trying to actually have a constructive discussion, so have I but it seems that it is almost required to say 'Father, forgive me for I have sinned' before that conversation can take place. That's not going to happen with me.

The anonymous keyboard warriors who feel that they have the right of it and no one with a different POV could possibly be right are a dime a dozen, from both sides.

There's no such thing as white fragility, it's white people sick and tired of everyone biting the hand that feeds them and then complaining about the taste.

Eh. Other than these views, he takes care of my sister and niece very well. And Im not the one sleeping with him. She has found a way to overlook it in her marriage. That's her accord though, and none of mine.
