The ruling classes have been perfecting brainwashing methods since the beginning of civilization. The ancient Egyptian ruling class were the original masters of state propaganda. Not much has changed since then except superficially. And that is why I consider myself a sort of philosophical anarchist. Since its emergence in ancient times, the state has always been an instrument of oppression and exploitation. And that is never going to change.

I agree that Obama is both thoughtful and intelligent. This does not change the fact that he knowingly did a bad thing - many of them.

Obama's presidency in general was a complete 180 from his previous beliefs. He was turned - very quickly - into an Establishment wonk.

Here we had a Harvard constitutional scholar -and civil rights activist - take on a policy that trashed individual liberty and the founding principles .. moving us further down the path of a quazi totalitarian police state.

"Give me Liberty or Give me Death" "Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase temporary security deserve neither liberty or security".

The founders knew well the age old trick of getting the people to trade individual liberty for security - and so does Obama.

Stalin knew this trick - using fear of an external threat to get the masses to give up liberty for security. "Security for the Motherland"
Hitler did the same - it is not some big secret to those that study this stuff - "Fatherland Security"

Bush perhaps was not well aware of these things but his handlers were. "Homeland Security"

Somehow we went from "liberty or death" to on our knees -hiding in corners and quivering in fear - begging to give up essential liberty over a risk of harm that is 400 times less than the risk of harm from "walking"

It has now become our "Patriotic Duty" to give up essential liberty for security.

Obama changed the name of the Patriot Act to the equally Orwellian doublespeak "Freedom Act"

When the head of the NSA lied to congress (felony 1) about en mass spying (felony 2) Obama's comments in defense of this made me almost fall out of my chair. "If we want increased security - we have to give a little"

Now perhaps Bush would not get it but, Obama knew exactly what he was saying .. yet - he said it anyway.

Obama then reduced Gov't transparency and went after whistle blowers (and I am not talking Snowden/Manning ) like never before. These are folks that tried to out Gov't crimes through legitimate channels.

In 2013 Obama made it legal for our intelligence agencies to create and disseminate propaganda on US citizens.

In 2013 Obama rescinded the law making it illegal to arm terrorists groups (not that he had not been doing this prior to rescinding the law).

Obama knew exactly what the score in Syria was. As per the link given you previously - he knew exactly what the rebel opposition was. I can give you a link from the Defense Intelligence agency stating that the rebels were all Islamist nutjobs.

ISIS did not exist in any significance in the early stages of the war. It was Syria Salafist groups - Al Qaeda/Al Nusra and others of the same ilk such as the Islamic Front.

Right from the beginning - tens of thousands of tons of sophisticated military technology poured into Syria from the US, Saudi Arabia and various other nation states. Benghazi was part of this early in 2012 - just after the insurgency started. Clinton should be under lock and key right now for lying to congress when asked by Rand Paul about this during the Benghazi hearings.

With support of the West, the Gulf nations and others - Tens of thousands of foreign Jihadists poured into Syria to support the cause. The western infidel is one thing - Secularism in a Muslim Nation in the Middle East is a cancer from within.

In short order these groups took over most of Syria. In 2013 many of this groups coalesced with the idea of forming a Caliphate - an "Islamic State" - IS - ISIL - ISIS - Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant/Syria. Contrary to the nonsense documentaries one might view on the "History Channel" - it was major nation states arming and supporting these groups that led to the modern incarnation of ISIS - not the pull-out of Iraq which had nothing to do with it.

This action led to the worst humanitarian crisis so far this decade (over 500,000 dead), the refugee crisis, destruction of Syria, and the rise of the modern incarnation of ISIS.

ISIS was declared in late 2013. In 2014 however, our dog in Syria went off its leash and went into Iraq. This created a problem for Obama. We were fighting ISIS in Iraq but on the same side as ISIS/Al Qaeda in Syria.

Rand Paul on CNN's Sunday morning program "State of the Union" described this situation well.

    http://cnnpressroom.blogs.cnn.com/2...-my-son-into-that-mess-on-the-crisis-in-iraq/

Now stop for a moment - What just happened here .. a Senior member of Congress just stated on national television that we were arming the 911 terrorists.

What ?? Is this Crazy talk ? The next day - the front page of every newspaper and leading story on every network should have been "Congressman Paul accuses Obama of arming the 911 terrorists"

Media response ? Crickets ... abject silence. The NY-Times (and a gazillion other sources) had been reporting for years that the rebels were all extremists - with quotes from Gov't sources "finding a moderate is like finding a needle in haystack"

When ISIS went into Iraq in 2014 - this necessitated the "Moderate Rebel Lie" and the propaganda machine went into action. The Times and the rest of our "fair and free" MSM completely forgot its previous reporting and went along with the lie.

Forgive me for gainsaying your apology for Obama but, I am just getting started - and this is from someone who - although I lean right - was so disgusted by Bush that I voted for the guy.

You may be familiar with Edward Bernays - "Propaganda". There are others but if you have a chance google a bit on this fellow. There is a huge amount of work that has gone into studying - and perfecting actually - media manipulation of the masses.

The powers at be have it down to a science.

Thanks for the time and effort you put into your reply. *hat tip*

I too lean right, and I didn't vote for Obama in either election. So my comments about him are not out of some partisan bias in favor of the guy.

I agree with much of what you said. Yes, Obama went from promising transparency in government (a major promise in his campaign for the presidency) to just the opposite. The Libyan operation was called nothing more than a "no fly zone", but it turned into the wholesale destruction of Libyan forces, culminating in the assassination of Libya's head of state. There was the YouTube movie lie about Benghazi. And then yes, there was the "moderate rebel" lie.

Here's the part that makes no sense, and it lends to my opinion that Obama was guided more by a naive belief in the "Arab Spring" rather than by a deliberate, knowing decision to arm AQ and ISIS. At the same time all of this was going on in Syria, Obama was bloodying his hands with attacks against AQ in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen, and Somalia. Under his orders, the U.S. also killed thousands of taliban fighters in Afghanistan. And, of course, there was the raid that killed bin Laden.

So it is hard to believe that Obama knowingly armed AQ/ISIS in Syria. Why would he want them to take over Syria? Everywhere else in the world, he's killing them. It just makes no sense. And so this is why I think he did what he did naively believing in the goodness of the Arab Spring movement. I think this is a case of wanting to believe in something so badly that what is real is replaced by that which is unreal. And if anyone in his intelligence services was warning him about those "moderate rebels", I think he didn't want to believe it. And perhaps he knew there would be some elements like that among the Syrian rebels, but that they would not be significant, still naively convinced in his own mind about the goodness of the majority of the people involved in this supposedly pro-freedom, pro-democracy movement.

I'm not trying to excuse Obama. I always thought this was a bad idea from Day One. I didn't want the U.S. involved in Syria in any way, shape or form. But I cannot square Obama's persecution of AQ in other parts of the world with knowingly and deliberately trying to help AQ/ISIS overthrow the government of Syria. And once the air war got started to destroy ISIS, we killed literally tens of thousands of ISIS fighters. Some say around 100,000.

I think Obama let his personal beliefs get in the way of this judgement and in the way of objective thinking.

The whistleblower link I posted is long but worth the time to listen to the experience of at least on of them. It is both hard and scary.

The Arab spring was an Islamist movement. Sure they claimed to favor fair and free elections but,
Fair and free elections in a brainwashed society are anything but fair or free. Just as in the US , which is now a propaganda state- without an population that is educated in certain things - there is no such thing as a functional democratic process. This is Democracy 101.

While average Joe might not realize this - as stated previously by you - Obama is not average Joe.

Obama was 100% aware of what he was supporting in Syria. He was aware that the insurgency was hardcore Islamist. He knew he was arming Al Qaeda's affiliate in Syria - Al Nusra and other Salafi group of the same ilk - right from the get go. Every journalist and any person who has more than a minimal understanding of the situation in Syria knew this.

VP Biden knew this - and he contradicted Obama's "Moderate Rebel Lie" directly.

This was after a talk Biden gave at Harvard.

    https://mideastshuffle.com/2014/10/04/biden-turks-saudis-uae-funded-and-armed-al-nusra-and-al-qaeda/

What Biden does not mention is that the CIA and a bunch of other nations were also facilitating arms transfers to the extremists in Syria - the idea that Biden was unaware of this is preposterous nonsense.

Biden touts the "Sunni/Shia" narrative but this is a falsehood. 50% of Assad's regular army is Sunni. The other problem is that sophisticated US technology such as TOW missiles has an end use condition attached. It is not like El Saud can just give this technology to any tom dick or harry without US approval.

Then there is the problem of the MSM who was touting the State Sponsored Establishment narrative/ "moderate rebel lie". Numerous media outlets covered this gaff - The Saudi's complained loudly and Biden had to walk his comments back. The coverage completely ignored the fact that Biden contradicts Obama's moderate rebel narrative.

When you get into the scope and sheer amount of weapons that flowed into Syria it quickly becomes clear that this was not possible without major efforts on the part of the US and a plethora of other Nation States. We are talking Tanks, Howitzers .. major hardware. Not something that is smuggled in to Syria in a back-pack or pick up truck.

This is just one article but it gives an idea of the scope of this effort.

    Except they aren't Democratic Socialists.
Again. Industrial democracy. Not simply Medicare-For-All and regulating Wall Street.

Workers control over the means of production. That is the core of Socialism or Democratic Socialism. The added word "Democratic" is redundant.

From your link. An all powerful governement bueaucracy would include government control of businesses which Democratic Socialists have made clear they do not want that.

Doesn’t socialism mean that the government will own and run everything?

Democratic socialists do not want to create an all-powerful government bureaucracy. But we do not want big corporate bureaucracies to control our society either. Rather, we believe that social and economic decisions should be made by those whom they most affect.

My point is if the Democratic Socialist wanted government to own all businesses in the US it would make for an all powerful government which is what the DS don't want. I am very familiar with Chomsky as I studied him in college. Capitalism only rewards the strong. If you are a humanitarian capitalism is not the answer to social issues. Corporations are abusing their leverage on society. A little more socialism in America is something I would like to see in my life time.
