Nobody is afraid of Russian ships by Syria. Everyone enjoyed Russian demonstration of its navy power when putler sent admiral Kuznetsov to Syria coast. Israel just bombed a base with Russians and Iranians in it and Russia did nothing.

By the way, if Russia sinks US warship in neutral waters - it’s declaration of war. Russia will be at war with 26 countries, 3 of which have nuclear weapons, combined economic power is probably like 50% of worlds GDP against Russia’s 2%. Your lower spine will be fried by the time I wake up.

 

I don't recall anyone calling for war against Russia during the 2016 campaign. I'm sure you're mistaken about that. I do recall lots of FUD propaganda saying that Hillary's election would lead to war against Russia, but never did I see a Hillary supporter calling for such a war, nor of course Hillary herself.

Why the chemical attack at all? It doesn't seem to make sense to me.

To me, the (undefinable) cost would be too high to use such tactics. At this point, a cruise missile aimed at Assad is not outside of the bounds. I expect our response to fall short of that, but it's not outside of what is possible. Why would Assad volunteer to become a neon target? Does he trust Russia to protect him? Why would Russia force the issue? They know we have to make s forceful response.

Is China orchestrating it all? Are they simply wanting us to deplete resources? This all baffles me.

 

Maybe it's all theater.

It's possible that we want Assad to remain in power, and that we will make a show of some punishment for the chemical attack.

 

Well, Assad and Russians know that when a regime is propped up artificially then a new rebellion is just a matter of time. To make a long lasting impression you must scare the hell out of the locals. How do you scare locals? With a painful mass murder.
Look at Grozny after putler was done with it in early 2000’s. That city was wiped off the map. It’s a strategy putler used on his own people and it seemed to work.
