U.S. Officials Repeatedly Urged China to Help Avert War in Ukraine

WASHINGTON — Over three months, senior Biden administration officials held half a dozen urgent meetings with top Chinese officials in which the Americans presented intelligence showing Russia’s troop buildup around Ukraine and beseeched the Chinese to tell Russia not to invade, according to U.S. officials.

Is the administration insane? Who could have thought the Chinese would have any interest in stopping Russian adventurism in Europe?

Each time, the Chinese officials, including the foreign minister and the ambassador to the United States, rebuffed the Americans, saying they did not think an invasion was in the works. After one diplomatic exchange in December, U.S. officials got intelligence showing Beijing had shared the information with Moscow, telling the Russians that the United States was trying to sow discord — and that China would not try to impede Russian plans and actions, the officials said.

So we gave classified intelligence to China, so they could share it with Russia. Great job Joe! These people are not just incompetent, they're stupid as well.

Declassified, wasn't it? And intelligence specifically about what Russia was up to. So yeah, Joe did a good job. Shame the Chinese were not in a mood to see reason at the time. This seems to be shifting, though.

So you actually think this was a good idea and had some probability of working? The idea seems incredibly dumb to me. Why would China want to help the West get out of a diplomatic spot it put itself in?

it depend if it benefit china or not. China is Ukrine largest trading partner, also china Belt & road need stability in that region. a war in eastern EU, does't benefit china one bit. furthermore, china prefer russia have decent economy/stability/military.
i think china didn't think putin would actually invade, now they are panic a bit. beside its not like US intel never got it wrong. they probably think US was overracting. Most ppl and countries, even ukraine didn't think putin gonna do a full invasion. boy was everybody wrong about that.

So you're argument is that the Chinese miscalculated?

Although China is the Ukraine's largest trading partner (7 billion), Russia is an even larger partner (48 billion) and is simply more important to China overall.

but china still need belt & road there, also stability in the region. yes i think china didn't think putin would did a full invasion, and they certainly wont belief what US told them, consider there aren't trust between china & US.
48billionis is small changes compare to china & US/EU trade.

US and EU trade were never at risk. China runs concentration camps and we gladly go to their Olympics and buy their products.

the point is china doesn't benefit at all in eastern EU war. it prefer, a strong/stable russia as its partner. it need belt&road, which require stability in eastern EU. it also buy alot farm good from Ukraine, it also have quite a bit exchange student there as well.

OK well you are arguing that the Chinese should actually oppose the policy they are actually following, which is supporting Russia.

china want putin negotiate with ukraine, but i doubt putin gonna stop. china will not fully abandon russia, since russia is still one of china most powerful partner, and china need the energy and farm goods. i wont call them ally, its more of marriage of convenience. decades ago US had better relationship with either china or russia, than themselves. its always better to have better relationship with your adversary than they had with themselves. both trump & biden try to get putin away from china, but failed.
china is more economic & tech competitor, which require good domestic economic & tech policy in US to compete them. russia seem like to use military whenever it can. 2008 georgia,2014 crimea, 2018 syria, and now. russia military budget is 10% of its GDP. compare that to china, last war china had was 1982, its military budget is 1.5-2% of its GDP. china is concentrate more on economy & tech growth, military is more of secondary concern.

I'm not sure China is even concerned with whether Russia negotiates with Ukraine or not. A lot of speculation in this post, so...maybe, maybe not?

well a disable east EU and weaken russia partner certainly doesn't benefit them. china want stability in the region so it can do business there. $$$ is important for Xi common prosperity, and economy is the only good thing why there hasn't been another tiananmen square

I highly doubt the the administration was presenting evidence to China that they didn't already have. And I see no reason why it's not a good idea to appeal to one of the top 3 superpowers in the world, and in the affected region, in an effort to stop another superpower from invading a country. I'm sure those involved probably knew China wasn't going to do anything but there was nothing to lose by making the appeal in an effort to stop a war that may threaten to draw more countries into it in the future.

The Biden administration has been enabling Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

There must be a reason. At some point it might be a good idea for an independent prosecutor to discover the reason.

Russian military buildup was pretty much common knowledge. Trying to get China to pitch in was worth the shot, even if low probability.

A real journalist might ask: "President Biden did you share intelligence with China about the location of Ukrainian Javelin missiles"?

After China restricted Domestic Travel in and out of Hubei Province, but allowed International travel out of that restricted area and by doing that dropped a Biological Covid-19 Weapon upon the entire Earth that has killed 6 Million people, Why in the HELL! would Beijing Biden trust anything the Chinese had to say unless he's in Bed with them.

Well I think they have been enabling it in effect, but not in intention. Biden of course is a non issue. He's reading (barely) the words of others. I simply think the people in his administration and the State Department are just incredibly wrong in their worldview and couldn't help but make all the wrong moves. Unfortunately for the Ukrainians, their miscalculations has real world consequences.

I just don't understand what is the carrot to get China to betray an ally in favor of their adversary (us). Such a gambit might be worthwhile if you have a particularly large prize to offer the Chinese, but the article makes no mention of that. More like they assume China would actually care about Ukrainians.

China benefit both way. Russia needs the support and logistics which the Chinese are happy to sell him. But the moment it turns sour for the Russians and they’re weaken, China will move to seize regions north of them. There’s no honor between communist despots. China has an history of invading their friends when they’re down.
