I don't have all the answers, but I can state for a fact that our rising poor population preceded both the increased trade with China and the migration, restricted, unrestricted or otherwise, to America. It started when heavy manufacturing, especially the Big Three automakers, major American appliance manufacturers, major American machine tool manufacturers, and heavy over-the-road truck manufacturers started out-sourcing parts and components manufacturing to lower cost North American parts makers in the USA, Canada and Mexico, starting the mid 1970's, and progressing at an accelerated rate into the 1980's and mid-1990's, well before trade with China started increasing. Heavy dependence on China, both as a source for ultra-cheap suppliers and as a large, growing middle-income and upper-income based marketplace didn't start until around 1995~1996, and then took off like a rocket. For example, GM had been involved in China for decades, but until they kicked off a major joint venture with SAIC, in 1997, their sales in China were a pittance. Now, as recently as 2016, SAIC General Motors Co., Ltd. sold over 4,000,000 cars and trucks, most under the Buick, Cadillac and Chevrolet brands.

That came well after foreign automakers started production, as well as design and R&D, in North America, with plants starting to take hold in America first, then in both Canada and Mexico. As these transplants took hold, they helped establish a parts supplier base that the Big Three and heavy truck and construction/off-road manufacturers jumped on, at wages that were half, and in many cases one fourth to one third, that of traditional Detroit automakers/heavy-truck manufacturing levels. That continued to put downward pressure on middle class blue and white collar incomes, affecting all those people who depend on them for business, and that is the start of the growth of poor populations

 

As I said before, that's been going on for decades, and it started well before heavy trade with China. All trade with China did was exacerbate an already bad trend.

 

Whenever outsourcing began it will end when all manufacturing has moved overseas

really, you still don't get it? we don't do it now because china Currently is not an ally but a rival. you know how much weapon US sell to china in 70s-80s? some of their old ship are full of US parts such as GE turbine engine. now we doing the same with india, even shift weapon assembly line to india. there is no permanent friend just permanent interest. the dominated power will always be threaten by a rising power that has their own agenda. whether its india/china or someone else.

I do care about US future especially my family is here, but this zero-sum game is outdated. your idea of US furture is close off and live in a box, like pre WWII. well modern world are interconnected. after TPP withdrawn ASEAN start getting much closer to china. Phillippine a traditional ally basically told US not to come to SCS. while china expand its interest globally via belt and road and other softpower, we retract.

well your idea of protectionism will be cause of that downfall. tariff don't work with developed consumer base economy, it will hurt it. but don't listen to me, listen to ALL the economist whos against tariff.

I don't think you have played that tape all the way to the end.
If I understand you correctly you would just add tariffs on everyone until we could start to make money making it all in the US. Is that the plan?

 

My idea that countries who want to sell to America be prepared to buy from America is not outdated

It may be heresy to globalists who think America ould be limited to no more than 6% of the worlds wealth

That solution will only hurt the poor in our country and solve nothing. China is making an effort to curtail pollution and we are going in the opposite direction.

Tell that to farmers. We have a trade deficit with China, but it isn't like buy nothing from America. More like $187.5 billion in goods and services exported to China.
