US evangelical magazine calls for removal of "grossly immoral" Trump

1. (CNN) A leading Christian magazine founded by late evangelist Billy Graham -- father of key presidential supporter Franklin Graham -- published an op-ed on Thursday calling for President Donald Trump to be removed from office and urging evangelicals not to support him.....

The publication, an influential one among evangelicals, has criticized Trump before on immigration and other issues, but never before called for his removal. The op-ed shows potential reasoning for dissent among a key faction of the Republican coalition as Trump prepares for a potential Senate trial following his impeachment by the House of Representatives Wednesday night.....

The magazine's web servers were strained by all the web traffic when the editorial came out on Thursday afternoon. After some temporary hiccups, service was mostly restored....

2. … Whether Mr. Trump should be removed from office by the Senate or by popular vote next election—that is a matter of prudential judgment. That he should be removed, we believe, is not a matter of partisan loyalties but loyalty to the Creator of the Ten Commandments.

To the many evangelicals who continue to support Mr. Trump in spite of his blackened moral record, we might say this: Remember who you are and whom you serve. Consider how your justification of Mr. Trump influences your witness to your Lord and Savior. Consider what an unbelieving world will say if you continue to brush off Mr. Trump’s immoral words and behavior in the cause of political expediency. If we don’t reverse course now, will anyone take anything we say about justice and righteousness with any seriousness for decades to come? Can we say with a straight face that abortion is a great evil that cannot be tolerated and, with the same straight face, say that the bent and broken character of our nation’s leader doesn’t really matter in the end?

We have reserved judgment on Mr. Trump for years now. Some have criticized us for our reserve. But when it comes to condemning the behavior of another, patient charity must come first. So we have done our best to give evangelical Trump supporters their due, to try to understand their point of view, to see the prudential nature of so many political decisions they have made regarding Mr. Trump. To use an old cliché, it’s time to call a spade a spade, to say that no matter how many hands we win in this political poker game, we are playing with a stacked deck of gross immorality and ethical incompetence. And just when we think it’s time to push all our chips to the center of the table, that’s when the whole game will come crashing down. It will crash down on the reputation of evangelical religion and on the world’s understanding of the gospel. And it will come crashing down on a nation of men and women whose welfare is also our concern.

 

Already two threads on this. CT isn't that influential anymore, they've been on life support for years. They've long been more into social justice warriors and gun violence, etc. than Christianity.

 

Interesting. I suspect this means considerably fewer subscribers to the magazine. Time will tell.

I didn’t want to read the entire post, but I couldn’t find the name of the magazine in the first 3 paragraphs. I mean it says who created it, that it has a web site and its an influential publication but it doesn’t give the name of the magazine.

Hell, for all I know it could be Al Bundy’s favorite magazine BIG ‘UNS. I mean I’ve heard Al yell all sorts of evangelical names when he open up his monthly subscription of BIG ‘UNS to the centerfold. Here’s proof.

The magazine is Christianity Today and the editor is Mark Galli. Galli is a native Californian and author of 4 other books. His books only have mediocre reviews and have all been revised. Some up to six times. I think he’s looking for a big sell to the Dems.

 

Trump destroyed the religious right, something the left could never do, the religious right is irrelevant now

 

The article referred in the first thread was published before the wake of impeachment proceedings, and had nothing to do with the shocking editorial.

The second thread is just a reference to the original editorial by another party.

The Graham family is no longer associated with the publication. Franklin Graham, Billy Graham’s son, is also an influential Christian evangelical leader and a staunch Trump supporter. His ministry publishes its own magazine, Decision.

The magazine’s shocking editorial was written by editor in chief Mark Galli.

 

Religious participation in this country has been on the decline for over 20 years. Trump had nothing to do with destroying the religious right. The destruction of the family unit is the main cause.

They have gotten what they needed out of Trump and he has nothing left to give:

• courts all the way to the Supreme Court have now been stacked for years / decades
• state department has been gutted
• treatment of immigrants at an all time low
• tax break that’s permanent for corps but expires for citizens soon
• isolation of the US from all progressive allies

He is now more a liability that can take the rest down with him. His administration has exceeded their wildest dreams and now it’s time to cut him out and get someone like Pence in to maintain the new status quo as long as possible.

There is nothing new about his behavior they didn’t know 3 years ago or even 20.

 

I am a member of a number of Atheist organizations both formal, and informal. Not one of them supports Trump.
