From what I've read it's only 2 500 troops over the life of the entire programme, which I think is 12 months.

From what the US is saying it's for rapid transport of humanitarian aid to places such as Indonesia since we're so close. It doesn't make sense for 2 500 US Marines to be sitting there as a stern look at China.

Actually, it's not bending over as the US originally wanted to build a base.

This is what I have read as well. Which is acceptable in my opinion, as long as there is acceptance from you guys.

The US has no bases in Australia and yes, Australian troops go to the US.

Australian manhood should be hang its head in shame. You folks obviously want a lifeline. Defend yourselves.

I oppose the American/Australian defense relationship. Australia should face China all alone. How do you think that would turn out? Haha.

    Hey Mak,

There's a big strong US Marine in your future. Haha.

Oz should defend itself without begging for US protection.

We defend ourselves with US help, and vice versa. We help each other.

Well, there's a US Marine on his way to give you all the help you can stand.

On a more serious note, the Australian left has soured me on any kind of defense relationship between the USA and Oz. Australia should stand up on its own two feet and face the world alone.

It was the US who asked for this.

is that this has nothing to do with China and is all about Islamist piracy in Indonesia (i.e. an expansion of "the war on terrorism"). Keep an eye out for special missions into Indonesia.

That's even worse. It makes Oz sound like a slattern bending over.

Obama wants to retain some vestige of Empire. But it's too late for Empire for America. America needs to come home and avoid entanglements in the eastern hemisphere.

The US and Australia are allies. Australia also has troops go to the US.

Neither America nor Oz gained one thing from involvement in Iraq. Iran won that war.

Neither America nor Oz will gain anything from involvement in Afghanistan. It's been a fool's errand.

America made terrible mistakes and Oz came along like Santa's little helper.

The Australian left has convincingly demonstrated that there can be no reliable alliance between our countries. Australian troops who come to America for training are part of a mutual defense program that should end.

Australia and America became allies during an era when the Realist and Internationalist Schools of Thought controlled American foreign and defense policy. Times change. Neo-Isolationism is the ascendant School in American thinking. Obama's actions look like the dying embers of a fire.

While serving in the Australian Army I had on a few occasions worked with US Marines. Our guys have nothing to worry about, our women will soon realise that the US Marines are Americans so everything is only bigger and better in their minds.

The reason for the stationing of troops in Australia is purely political. It is 250 marines next year, building in number of the following years until we receive the largest shipment of 2,500. Not really a significant number but a token to show unity. It will also give the US an extended arm into the Asia/Pacific region.

The US has much more to gain then we do in Australia, it will actually make us a target.

LOL, what do you mean by 'base'!!!? Couldnt you tell by the careful language being used they were building a 'base'. The way they explained it is way open to many possible options, building facilities for the US will be included in all of them. Can't wait to hear the real details of this.
