People knowledgeable and experienced in survival skills are more likely to survive than than who believe "ignorance is bliss".

Disagreed. Did you see how fast the Democrats dismantled our military after 1991? Both the USAF and Army had to recall a bunch of people to fight Desert Storm then kicked them all back to the street afterward.

And by the time that happened, the Soviet Union ceased to exist entirely.

What threat was there in the world after then Soviet Union collapsed that justified the expense of our military at the same level as it had been pre-91?

That’s another topic. The first one was your dissing books as being able to supple information. A good field guide for plant identification would teach people what is edible and what is not. A survival manual would teach them how to build small animal and fish snares and traps.

true, but the Russian military continued to exist.

Dude, you’re moving the goalposts. Agreed the Russian threat diminished at the time because of the chaos in Russia. However, that wasn’t what we were discussing.

I’m not moving any goalposts. Against the Soviets, after about 1985, there’s no chance that NATO loses the conventional fight.

The thread title is "We are all going to die."

That is the one universal truth about all people.

Actually, the Little John had a relatively short life, being retired in 1969. From 1962 until 1991 the main weapon system the the launching of tactical nukes was the Pershing series.

But a great many scenarios involved commanders possibly deciding to use tactical nukes. But at least as NATO doctrine, it was as a retaliation not as an instigation. Even in NATO few doubted that the Warsaw pact could be held back conventionally, the only concern was how long it would take and how many lives would be lost. Even the most pessimistic plans had the lines stabilizing well short of the French-German border.

The concern however on the other side was what the USSR might do. If NATO successfully struck back and retook West Germany, there would be little left to prevent them from taking over most of the Warsaw pact, if not entering the Soviet Union itself.

This is why most novels written by experts in this field (Sir John Hackett, Tom Clancy), and popular movies like Threads and The Day After generally had either a larger exchange or threat of exchange start after a single use. The Third World War is somewhat unique, in which after nuking Birmingham England as a threat to have NATO stop their attacks, the US and UK both respond by nuking Minsk. Which leads to the collapse of the Soviet Union from within, knowing what would happen if they did not stop the belligerence of their government.

Red Storm Rising ends similarly, but without the nuclear exchange. But the Soviet Government collapsing from within when some high members realize that the highest members are about to launch such an attack.

The truth of what was going on behind the scenes since the '70's is pretty juicy as well.....
