For anyone looking for something just, "different," or a bit odd--

I just caught the end of the Celebrity Dating Game. Same tacky, awkward game you remember-- complete, I would imagine, w/ crude innuendos-- but w/ new staff & gimmicks.

The hostess is the New Girl, Zooey Deschanel, dressed in a stiff, light pink, Disney-Princess dress, and doing her signature girl on cat tranquilizers, impression, as she delivers lines as though she is challenging viewers to guess whether her campy vibe arises out of earnestness, or irony.

The new element, is that the questioner is a "celebrity," with the caveat, that the meaning of this term has loosened, considerably, in recent years.

Zooey has a sidekick, of sorts, in Michael Bolton, who, near game-end, gets to give the contestants clues as to the identity of the celeb, to the tune of some well-known love song.

What more can I, or do I need to, say?

The Netflix series, Squid Games, isn't at all typical of what I would recommend, but I definitely recommend it (for mature audiences only). It is pretty profound on several different levels, despite the violence and it being so gory -- things which would typically turn me off and which, in the past, made me question the popularity of even highly acclaimed Quentin Tarantino films.

Overall, even though on a few (in the scheme of things, minor) points, one might find faults and some flaws with the show, after spending the whole day watching the entire 9 part/hour series, I feel a bit more indebted to South Korea than I did in the past (notwithstanding all the Korean gadgets and appliances and a good bit of Korean series and movies I have watched).

We watched season 1. We're debating on season 2.

It's like Back to the Future. One event in your HS life defines your entire adulthood? George stood up against the bully one time, and now the bully has a **** job the rest of his life?

It just felt extreme that Johnny losing one Karate competition turned him into a lifelong loser. That's such an odd message to send. Every super successful person will tell you they learn more from their losses than their gains. I've always found that to be true.

    Does it get better?

Just lately, as you might guess by my current avatar, I'm enjoying The Munsters. It's a series I was always at least aware of and had seen a bit in my youth, but only now am I sitting down to watch it through. I love it! Great characters and good episode ideas.

Pinky and The Brain. I only ever suffered through the rest of the Animaniacs other bits for Pinky and The Brain, and now Pinky and The Brain are all by themselves on Hulu. Watching it now, I realized I didn't even get most of the jokes when I was kid.

I remember that one. You must be a fellow youngster if you were watching Animaniacs.

Did you ever watch Space Ghost: Coast To Coast? :D

Whose checked out Squid Game? We've watched three episodes.

This is one weird AF, dystopian story, that's for sure.

The original Law and Order. Rumor has it it will be making a comeback, different cast, same platform.

While it will likely be good, there will be something missing without Jerry Orbach's dry sarcasm.....

I just watched Squid Game this weekend and thought it was pretty good. I just couldn't resist all of the hype so I thought I better watch it before someone gives away the story this week in some video meeting. This is the first Korean TV series I watched. The acting was very good and I definitely recommend watching it with subtitles and not the English dubbed version. People are talking about a season 2 but I am not sure how that season would play out. I would be skeptical if they could capture the same intrigue for another season.

I finally got around to watching the first episode of Foundation on Apple TV. I'd waited because my expectations were pretty low. How can Asimov be adapted to TV? Turns out it seems pretty good.

    SUBTOPICS: Many Thanks
    ※→. et al,

I just wanted to say, thanks to your group. I retired, and have just started watching more TV/Internet outlets in the last two years. Your group gave me a number of leads that directed my attention to some very interesting programs.

    My Top Favorites are:
I was sorry to see "The Irregulars" canceled. It had the makings of long-term success (my opinion). But then, I was a faithful fan of Star Trek.

I like the Detective Series. But my impression is that the better ones are being made outside the US.

    ◈ Murdock Mysteries,
    ◈ Midsummer Mysteries,
    ◈ My Life iss Murder,
    ◈ Brokenwood Mysteries,
    ◈ Father Brown,

OK: I stop hogging the bandwidth. And again, some of your points are truly gifted.

We seem to have a few obscure shows in common. I also watch Motherland: Ft Salem and Cursed (although Cursed is canceled). These were OK shows that I watched with my wife. The Expanse is great and I give that a big thumbs up as well as Warrior Nun, which in spite of it's ridiculous title, is a really good show.

    SUBTOPICS: Network Mentality
    ※→ Lil Mike, et al,

While I get that, the Network Executives make their decisions based on the attempt to maximize the wealth of the shareholders, I also think that they have fallen prey to the footprint of losing enormous profits in favor of short-term gains.

What is not is immediately apparent is that the Network Executives have misplaced their knowledge and understanding of the craft and qualities that identify and separate the truly great ensembles in the performing arts from those in the guild that entertain the audience to a great degree; but not generate spectacular monetary income on their investment.

I took my wife (the same 19-year old I married 43 years ago) to the Louvre Museum The Mona Lisa (by Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci). There was so much protection around it (the roped-off, hermetically sealed, temperature-controlled, bullet resistant, and tinted glass box) that if I got a ten-second look at it from 20 feet away - I was lucky to get that. And I often get the feeling that the Network Executives are similarly separated from their own programming that they miss entirely the presentation.

I went to sample Squid Games. I was sure I wouldn't like it based on a trailer/description. Cliched old idea.

9 episodes later I realized the season was done.

I've been avoiding the show, even while friends have been raving about it. Maybe I should give it a try.

Another one I stumbled across is Professor T, on PBS. One series was in German, with subtitles and the rest in English. Moriarity as a disturbed good guy (obs/comp-germaphobe etc) and with lots of fantasy sequences and plot twists

    Oh wow, that good, huh?
I'll be in trouble because during the football season I spend most of Saturdays watching college games and most of Sundays watching the NFL so I don't see how I'll block out 9 hours. But I'll keep it in mind if I get a vacation day or a holiday and have time to kill. Thanks.
