What if the AJC hadn't declared war on Germany in 1933?

The question is what if Samuel Untermyer hadn't declared war on all things German from the safety of Madison Square Garden in 1933?

On March 12, 1933 the American Jewish Congress announced a massive protest at Madison Square Gardens for March 27. At that time the commander in chief of the Jewish War Veterans called for an American boycott of German goods. In the meantime, on March 23, 20,000 Jews protested at New York's City Hall as rallies were staged outside the North German Lloyd and Hamburg-American shipping lines and boycotts were mounted against German goods throughout shops and businesses in New York City.

    snip

the Jewish newspaper Natscha Retsch wrote:

The war against Germany will be waged by all Jewish communities, conferences, congresses... by every individual Jew. Thereby the war against Germany will ideologically enliven and promote our interests, which require that Germany be wholly destroyed.

The danger for us Jews lies in the whole German people, in Germany as a whole as well as individually. It must be rendered harmless for all time.... In this war we Jews have to participate, and this with all the strength and might we have at our disposal.

"Each of you, Jew and Gentile alike, who has not already enlisted in this sacred war should do so now and here. It is not sufficient that you should buy no goods made in Germany. You must refuse to deal with any merchant or shopkeeper who sells any German-made goods or who patronises German ships or shipping.... we will undermine the Hitler regime and bring the German people to their senses by destroying their export trade on which their very existence depends." -

Samuel Undermeyer, in a Radio Broadcast on WABC, New York, August 6, 1933. Reported in the New York Times, August 7, 1933.

"Hitler will have no war (does not want war), but we will force it on him, not this year, but soon." -

Emil Ludwig Cohn in Les Annales, June, 1934 (also quoted in his book "The New Holy Alliance").

"We Jews are going to bring a war on Germany." - David A. Brown, National Chairman, United Jewish Campaign, 1934

(quoted in "I Testify Against The Jews" by Robert Edward Edmondson, page 188 and "The Jewish War of Survival" by Arnold Leese, page 52).

"We want to bring about a deep hatred for the Germans, for German soldiers, sailors, and airmen. We must hate until we win." -

Lord Beaverbrook, quoted in Niemals! by Heinrich Goitsch.

"There is only one power which really counts. The power of political pressure. We Jews are the most powerful people on earth, because we have this power, and we know how to apply it." -

NEVER underestimate the power of stupid people to start a war.

A lot of blather there, indeed, Margot.

The AJC's mindset was the same as the rest of the world, following WWI. Germany was in disgrace but that came from the reparations set by the Paris Peace Treaty.

Why would you single out a small group and act like that played a large role when Germany was held in low regard by nearly EVERY nation during that period?

Obviously it was NOT the fault of the Jewish people, but I have wondered whether or not Hitler would have targeted them so horribly if Samuel Untermyer hadn't declared war on them from the safety of Madison Square Garden.. He was the Zionist leader in the US and had spent two decades raising funds for the "six million" starving Jews of Eastern Europe.

Obviously had nothing to do with it since Mein Kampf was published in 25-26.

Perhaps this guy would not be so pissed of, if Hitler did not believe in the anti semitic drivel of the Nazi party. Perhaps if hitler had not written Mein Kampf he would not lose some of the greatest minds of Germany, or waste huge resources to kill Jews that could have been used to better Germany.

Hitler's anti-Semitic drivel was his own... just like the extraordinarily hateful Nuremberg Laws..

Read them... They took Jewish citizenship and property.. then their jobs... then their freedom.. then their lives. Its a classic demonstration of demonizing your enemy and justifying ethnic cleansing.

Well yeah he would have, you see his rhetoric started in the 1920s. Tell you what don't get your history lessons from white power sites. Holocaust deniers are liker, birthers, truthers and flat earhers. Short of facts and reality long on hate and nonsense.

Hitler was at one time in jail and at another time a homeless thug among thugs... I don't remember what year he finally captured an audience..

I am female and although I have read the Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, I didn't memorize it..

But, this is a pretty good summary of events leading up to WW2 from 1918 thru 1924..

Margot, your idea that Hitler might not have targeted the Jews had they not denounced him so strongly is similar to the logic rapists use..."She dressed like a sl*t so I couldn't help myself --- she asked for it."

Even had Hitler been pissed at the Jews - only a madman would do what he did. A truly evil madman.

Where the hell is this coming from?

You know as well as I do that the "boycott" was a wholly ineffective PR campaign invested with appropriate rhetoric.

You know as well as I do that Hitler's views on Jews were well established by 1933 - Mein Kampf was published in 1925 and by '33 when he seized power his views were well known and wide spread within Germany.

of course it wasn't till much later that the world became aware of his "final solution", but in 1933 that was inconceivable.

No question that Hitler was mad.. and just a horrendous liar.. His speeches slop all over the place murdering history and contradicting himself.

I just think that Untermyer may have been wiser to quietly evacuate more European Jews than declaring war on Germany from the US and leaving those people in place to face the consequences.

You have a point there. More Jews would have survived probably. It's just that hindsight is always 20-20 and no one really expected Hitler to go off like he did. For a long time, even German citizens didn't know the extent of what he'd done.

And that really says it all right there.

The fact is, Hitler had already been at war with the Jews long before "the Jews were at war with Hitler".

Immediately after assuming power in January 1933, the NAZI Party started to initiate it's program of race laws against Jews and other "undesirables" as quickly as they could. Calling for national boycotts against Jewish businesses, passing Race Laws to remove any Jews from civil service and many professions, and this was a week after this rally.

Sorry, but I am finding this attempt at justifying the atrocities of WWII rather disgusting.

And where would they have gone?

Nobody wanted them. The US refused to take them, England refused to take them, most countries of the world simply did not want the Jews.

Just look at the MS St. Lewis, which had 915 Jews trying to flee Germany. First denied entry in Cuba, then the US, then Canada, their 1 month odyssey finally saw a handful accepted in England, the remainder were finally allowed to settle in various countries outside of Europe.

Like France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. Where most were eventually rounded up by the Nazi's during the war as one country after another fell to the Nazi's. And their fate was largely the same as if they had remained in Germany.

There is no attempt to justify anything.. not the Nuremberg Laws no any of the atrocities that followed..

But in early 1933 Untermyer declared war on all things German from the safety of Madison Square Garden ... and I wonder if that didn't make matters worse.....

Untermyer was the leading Zionist in the US at the time.

And do you think Der Paper Hanger would have given a damn what a US Jew would have said? Not bloody likely. Nothing would have made matters worse, he had already stated clearly a decade prior in Mein Kampf that he intended.

Sorry, you can't put the cart before this horse.
