What is your general impression of the new HBO "House of the Dragon" series?

This spinoff 'prequel' of "Game of Thrones" had its first episode showing on HBO last night (Aug. 21). WITHOUT WRITING ANY SPOILERS, PLEASE, what was your general impression?

    *** NO SPOILERS ***

    "House of the Dragon"?

Well... superb imaging, excellent CGI (computer-generated imagery... special visual effects created using computer software), great set-design, and great costuming. The story line is a bit wooden and unimaginative, but, because it is a 'prequel', many of the elements of the plot must conform to all that followed later in "Game of Thrones", so, the writers didn't have a lot of opportunity in the beginning to be terribly creative.

At this starting point, it seems to me that a fairly obvious let-down is in the casting of the individual parts themselves. Sure, after only one episode, it's fair to assume that we can't expect much in the way of 'character' development yet, but several of the cast-members have a LONG way to go in order to be interesting or believable, and, frankly, some of them appear to have been miscast in the very beginning. We'll see. Knowing me, I'll probably watch all the episodes anyway, unless it REALLY starts to stink!

    Anyway -- 'no spoilers'!

I thought it was compelling. Matt Smith stole the show. I disagree about casting. I think it worked. That little girl is charming.

Sex, treachery, outrage, blood... What's not to love?

My wife is addicted and sat through a bunch of Game of Thrones reruns. Maybe my age makes me sardonic, but I got bored about halfway through this prequel. It takes quite a bit of skill to tell a story when we already know how it all ends.

Watched a docu-drama about how the first Oxford Dictionary came into being a few days ago. It was way more interesting to me even though I knew how it would end. That's how Nerds roll.

Edit--Just for clarity, the dictionary did not come into being a few days ago. I watched the movie a few days ago. :)

I watched it, but it's too early to form an opinion. I did decide I might rewatch the GOT to get a feel for some of the characters. The first episode was a little confusing.

I thought it was fine. Didn't blow me away, but didn't suck.

Maybe. I didn’t find it confusing at all. I thought it was completely in accordance with canon.

If you're talking about the girl with the 'silver' Targaryen hair, I don't quite see her as charming or "Targaryen"... but I will abide by my own thread-rule of "No Spoilers". We've only seen one episode, and as I remember, I wasn't all that overwhelmed by the very first episode of "Game of Thrones" so long ago.... But, today, I own all of that series in Blu-ray so that I never have to rely on a website to 'feed' it to me.

I have to agree. It doesn't seem like the same girl. She seems to lack that sense of idealism.

My wife just could not accept Matt Smith in that role. That's a "her" problem in that she only sees Dr Who when she sees him, so the Matt Smith sex scenes didn't go over well.

I thought the show overall was...OK but I don't find it compelling. Maybe as the story fleshes out that will change, but it seemed to have done well, HBO reported 10 million views, streams, or whatever they count now days.

I am definitely in on this show. It’s being handled well.

I find what Benioff and Weiss did to seasons 7 & 8 to be unforgivable. They got tired and bored, and put crap out there instead of handing it off to people who cared.

Let’s hope the spin-offs make that taste less bitter. There’s a series called Snow in the works.

That's completely the fault of GRR Martin, who couldn't (and still can't) be bothered to finish his series, leaving the TV people to finish it themselves. The last two seasons were very much how a fantasy show would look with just TV production people doing it, without leaning on someone who has all the notes. So I don't really blame Benioff and Weiss. They had no idea what Martin wanted and just wanted to wrap things up so they could move on to their Confederacy TV show which never happened.

After 3 episodes practically nothing has taken place, so its fairly boring. Same is true with the new Lord Of The Rings.

Meh... sure, the special effects, the CGI (especially with the dragons), the sets, the props, and the set designs were very innovative, interesting, and quite well done.

But, IMHO, the story-line is pretty transparent and uninspiring, the directing is scene-to-scene rather wooden, and, worst of all -- WHO RECRUITED THE CAST FOR THIS THING? I could probably go to a Denver-area bar on any given weekend and find a better cast than they rounded up for this half-assed 'entertainment'....

I'll go on watching it, I guess, if only because everything else on TV today is such low-brow, politically-correct bilge and sh!t... but that sure as hell doesn't make "House of Dragons" to be some wonderful achievement!

I wanna see more of Rhaedar naked, and there should be something about the tactical niceties of close infantry support by fire-breathing dragons. In Thrones Daenerys destroyed an entire Army in 3 passes. Here it seemed that one was just cooking a few guys at a crucial moment.

Also, aren't Targaryens fireproof? We've seen nothing yet of anybody saying the Dragons are their children.

I'm enjoying it. Nice to see the old 'sets' again. And I'm not comparing it to GOT - and even if I were, 3 episodes is not enough to compare it fairly to several seasons of a show that we'd never seen the likes of before. (At least I hadn't.)

It seems the dragons are used more sparingly and strategically. Daenerys used them in a psychopathic way.

I like to wait for the series to end before I binge the thing over a few days. Definitely on the watch list though.
