What will yesterday's drubbing of the GOP mean a year from now?

    Nate Silver muses:

As I have consistently noted, in 2016 the Democratic Party was perceived by their once most reliable demographic - less-educated, blue-collar white guys - as having abandoned their interests.

It is essential that they win them back by 2020 if not sooner - and it would not hurt to offer copious sacrifice to the gods that Trump is still around in November, 2018.

Elections usually go in favor of the party out of power in mid-terms and special elections.

What's sad is that the democrats have been losing so much that just even winning a couple of elections is now huge news to them.

It shows how far they have fallen.

Trump is too heavy a load for the GOP to bear.

Let's hope that they don't get their wish that the Trump Justice Department Special Counsel disposes of him for them before '20.

Two blue states elected Democrat Governors yesterday. Discredited LW pollster offers his insights.

Don’t Be Fooled by Tuesday. The Democrats Still Don’t Have a Winning Message.....

For all the euphoria over Tuesday’s result, the Democratic Party is still in trouble, especially in red states and swing states that didn’t have many elections Tuesday. The only way to assure that the experts are right about their good chances in 2018 is to develop a meaningful frame around the usual laundry list of policy proposals.

For the last four decades, Republicans have been much better at fashioning themes based on values. Ronald Reagan talked about “faith, family, freedom, work and neighborhood,” while Democrats—leery of “family values” as a dog whistle for a narrow right-wing agenda of opposition to abortion and prayer in schools—more often built their party on identity politics and interest groups. Even Obama’s inspirational “Hope and Change” message was not directly connected to values.....snip~

Democrats won't be winning back working class whites anytime soon.

The GOP simply lacks, or more importantly doesn't really want to craft, a message focusing towards anyone in the middle. Anyone who spends any amount of time with me will become a Republican, because I'm very good at crafting the message.

Conservative policies work for working people, while liberal policies, regardless of their platform, certainly do not. Now if only my own party would stop stepping on it's own dick.

Even if Republicans can retain the less-educated (and they're failing them miserably) it won't be enough to overcome the burden of an extremely unpopular POTUS.

I span two worlds; my mother grew up in a trailer and I dropped out of high school my senior year to enlist, because Uncle Sam sure as **** has never had to ask for a man in my family to serve during a time of war, and then I married into money.

Trump specifically has done quite a bit for both of my perspectives.

Certainly replacing 'ObamaCare" with "something terrific!" that covers "everybody" must have solidified trumpery among Americans in need of help.

And slashing taxes for the wealthiest folks, the Wall Street elite, and multi-national corporations should have them positively giddy

Drubbing? The GOP had 34 state Governors. Now Democrats won two gubernatorial races in blue states, and the GOP is down to 33 Governors.

You won two elections in blue states. You can try to read a lot into it, with how horrible the Democratic Party has been underperforming this par night must seem like a giant win.

    I did not win anything.

Nor do I pretend that two gubernatorial contests were all that Democrats won yesterday.

By design, the thread title is all I can see, and it makes me laugh out loud. Blue wins in a blue state.

The dem's definition of BREAKING NEWS? OK, then.

You appear to find it difficult to accept the results and their implications. Republicans would do better to honestly confront reality than try to spin it.

If the Dems can flip just 24 GOP seats in 2018 they will retake control of the House.

lol that's about it; they won a couple of blue states, and now think they can peddle nonsense to make themselves and their base feel better. Never mind the thousands of offices they lost nationwide, and will continue to lose, especially in 2018. Looking at the percentages they won by in totally blue states, it's laughable they think they're on a roll or something.

lmfao, better honestly confront reality - that Democrats just won gubernatorial in two blue states, and have lost iirc the other seven major races since the Presidential election. You obviously desperately WANT it to mean something significant - rational people can see that Democrats winning two gubernatorial races in blue states (where the GOP still has 33 Governorships) isn't significant or predictive.

yeah, I mean go on - if they win in every single state as blue or bluer than Virginia/NJ, that's a grand total of ZERO swing states. A party winning in its own territory isn't earthshaking.

Can they do that ONLY by winning safe seats in blue states, like they did recently?

lmfao, right? But naw, pointing out relevant and obvious facts like that is "spinning it" apparently:

By all objective assessments, including those of many Republicans, the Democratic Party did extremely well across the nation on Tuesday, winning not only governorships, but state legislative races and mayoral contests.

Typical was very red Georgia where Democrats won six legislative seats to Republicans two. Of those six Democratic victories, three of them were in districts previously held by Republicans.

Congressional Republicans are calling it quits in impressive numbers, conceding the huge advantage of incumbency.

Reminiscing, belittling gubernatorial victories, and ignoring the results nationally may suit your agenda, but you need to confront the present and assess what it means for the future.
