I'm running a very small system, but performs everything that I need. I'm simply running 12V DC and have made it as versatile as possible. Using one 100 watt solar panel and a cheap 6 bladed 12v wind generator that is supplemented with a 12v-24v DC converter I charge 3 - 12volt 12amp batteries that runs a few LCD lights, radio, a 10watt 7.5 HDTV and a larger 30watt 17" HDTV for special viewing, a old Dell Latitude laptop, and recharge various items like AAA rechargeable batteries, electric toothbrush, electric razor, rechargeable tools... and planned right, I can run the fully charged 12volt 12amp batteries in series to get the 36volts to run my 500watt electric bicycle that I take into town to deliver product and/or pick up supplies (about 15 miles on a full charge - 4 miles to the closest town). I use a Schneider 35amp controller as a load diversion to a old time DC heater that comes in handy on windy cold nights or I switch it to a water heater element on the outside during the summer. The batteries seem to be needed recycled every 2 or so years... about $100 for a new set... the entire renewable system with the electric bike kit is right around $1,000. So far I've been "off-grid" for three years...
