I am an agnostic atheist who tried an experiment. I attended a methodist church for several years, 'prayed', took communion, went to the adult bible study classes, and waited for faith to come - like some religious ball of theistic aura - to meet me half way, and thus I would commune with God!

Gave up after 4 or 5 years. Nothing. It ain't happening.

Baptist is a broad category that can be very different in whether they consider Bible as foundational. I'm Southern Baptist which upholds the Bible as authority.

True...but one Baptist denomination can be polar opposite from another in practically everything. Values, mission, agenda....

The Articles of Faith (written by Joseph Smith)
    1

We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.

    2

We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam’s transgression.

    3

We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.

    4

We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.

    5

We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof.

    6

We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth.

    7

We believe in the gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth.

    8

We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.

    9

We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.

    10

We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory.

    11

We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.

    12

We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.

    13

We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul—We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.

I wasn't sure whether to put "no religion" or "other." Up until fairly recently I was a practicing Zen Buddhist. I still hold many of the beliefs and some of the practices, but not all of them. I was raised Southern Baptist.

Do Mormons believe they obtain their salvation through Jesus?

Absolutely, 100%. There is no other way. "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."

I do miss the social aspect of church and have been trying to see what to do about that. I tried out the Unitarian Universalists, because they seemed pretty open minded, but it got waaaaay too political for me. They were open minded about religious beliefs, but not so much about politics. I have personal, mental health reasons for not returning to my Buddhist Sangha.

These days I'm kind of a "social pagan." Most religious rituals I attend are among neo-pagans. I participate when I feel comfortable doing so, and I'm a welcome visitor when I don't directly participate. Might try Quakers next, though.

So, all you need to do is confess Jesus as Lord and believe that God raised him from the dead. If you believe Joseph Smith is a false prophet - that's perfectly fine according to Mormons because Jesus is the way - right?

Between yourself and God, who is Joseph Smith's judge? When I first read your question and began to respond, a thought occurred to me that your question could be a prelude to assault, like a wolf in sheep's clothing. But I dismissed that thought and naively took your question as honest. I see that my first impression was right...that you were being dishonest for the purpose of discrediting Joseph Smith. Anyway, we believe that Jesus Christ restored his Church and authority thru Joseph Smith. And that while Jesus Christ is the savior, faith and repentance must be followed by baptism and the gift of the Holy Ghost by one with Jesus Christs authority. There is more to Jesus Christ, salvation and sacred ordinances than words in a book, or mans imagining or parroting of it. Our Heavenly Father is real as is heaven. And he always has been. So my question to you is, do you believe that God has a will of his own, is unchanging and the same yesterday, today, and forever?
