It's never been bad for you. It simply lacks the nutrients and fiber compared to whole grain breads. White bread is more empty calorie wise, but that's about it. That basic thinking is, if you are going to eat bread, eat whole grain because it has a better nutritional value that most people are lacking from their daily diet. Of course a grilled cheese on whole wheat is a sin that can not be forgiven.
I love bread but can no longer eat wheat. When I gave up eating that grain I lost 40 lbs and my tummy feels better than it has in 50 years!
