Who were the Popes in your lifetime?

It does not matter now whether you are Catholic our not.

Just click onto those names that you remember from your lifetime.

I could click onto all of them

With the exception of Pius XI
I added him in the last moment - in case somebody might be old enough.

Why would an atheist know the names of all the popes? How about any and all since 1934?

Why? If you are not aware of your current Pope then 1 of 2 things could be the reason. 1) you live under a rock. 2) your showing or have a lack of intelligence.

    I expected that question.
And my only answer is: "Why not?"

@ knowing the names of popes, even though one is not a Catholic

I am not a Communist, but as long as the Soviet Union existed, I always knew the names of the Soviet leaders.
I am not English, but I know that Queen Elizabeth II exists.

In Geman we have a saying: "über den Teller-Rand hinaus-schauen".
Which translates: "looking a bit further than just the rim of the food plate before you"

There is no reason for anybody to know how the Pope is (or who were all the Popes during their lifetimes). The Pope doesn't serve a function except ignoring rampant pedophilia with the ranks.

Intelligence has nothing to do with knowing the Pope (or previous popes).

It is also a question of culture and education to know such things.
I am not American, but I always know the name of the current President of the USA. :)

This thread is not only about those Popes, but also about our biographies.
Like: "What was your situation in life, when ...."
Or: "What do you remember of ....

I thought it might be a nice topic - without any theological quarreling.

I still think one need not be a Catholic to know the names of some of the Popes.

That's not what you queried in your OP.
Any topic concerning religion is going to lead to theological quarreling.
That's is not an accurate statement. A poster equated knowing the names of Popes to one's intelligence and you agreed with that. Therefore, your position has been shown to not only equate one's life experiences (Catholicism or something outside Catholicism) with knowledge or lack thereof regarding Popes' names, you've quantified that (by agreement) with one's level of intelligence.

    That's neither nice nor non-combative.

I think we have some active posters here who were born under Pope 1922-1938. We might even have a member listed who was born under Pope 1914-1922.
That's the way I compensate for limited memory.
Which Roman numeral accompanies French king Charles the well-served?

I once asked a librarian to help me complete my list of Italian Presidents since 1943. He said they change every 2 weeks don't they. I replied that the Prime Ministers change often but Italian Presidents have 7 year terms and most of them finish them.
He called the Italian embassy and they faxed the full list of department heads. I said they probably think most of them will be Prime Minister someday and I'll be able to keep track.

You did not click onto any names.
    A pity.
    Just criticism, but no co-operation.
    A real pity.

When a was a boy I thought thought all popes would be called Pius. :)
And that after Pius XI and Pius XII there would be Pius XIII.

It was a nice change when John XXIII was elected.
"Johannes der Drei-und-zwanzigste" in German :)

And now you all can go on with ridiculing and destroying my thread.
Is it such hard work to click onto a name you know?
    Thanx for nothing.

Until now I had thought that this forum was a friendly forum.
