I've always assumed that the Soviet Union was considered an enemy of the U.S.

If it is true that Russia helped Mr. Trump get elected, why would a supposed enemy
of this country choose to help Republicans over Democrats?

A better question is - why do some Republicans choose to help Russia?

Just my take but possible answers to the OP's question revolve around a couple of things; a) Putin's absolute hatred for Ms. Clinton - there is no way in hell he'd help her win an election, and b) Trump and company are very useful idiots for Putin to have under his thumb........

So then was the powerful dictator more afraid of Dorothy than the Wizard of Oz?

The Russians chose to assist the Republicans for the exact same reason the OP chose to have sex reassignment surgery.

The real question is why is it that those who fear Russia the most have no problem with Clinton accepting $140 million for their charity from they Russians and Clinton getting millions more giving speeches in Russia? They only notice evil when it may involve Trump.

Who is the better friend of Russia, the one's who gave them control over 20% of our uranium, did nothing while Russia invaded it's neighbors, did nothing while Russia interfered with our elections, stopped the instillation of missile bases in Turkey, patted Medvedev on the leg, telling him he would have more flexibility after the election or the President who sanctioned Russia and blew the smitterines out of there air base in Syria?

It wasn't a case of supporting a Republican. Putin's intent was to support trump. That's why all the effort was made by the Russians thru social media to influence the voters. Putin already had enough information on trump to make him his puppet. If Putin could get trump into the White House then Putin could blackmail trump to do certain things for Russia that he might normally not do. An example would be relaxing some sanctions we held against Russia. That's why you've heard trump referred to as 'Putin's puppet'. More and more of the republican party is starting to recognize all the Russia talk is proving to be true.

Thanks. That seems logical enough. So then why on Earth would Republicans and all of their various factions, be cheering for Trump?

Um, the Soviet Union doesn't exist anymore.

Russians survived and rejected collectivism and are running as far and fast away from it as they can. Which naturally means they're embracing individualism, which makes them natural ideological allies to the individualists here in the US. Add to that the typical Russian's enjoyment of guns, hunting, farming and general ruggedness, and it should be obvious why the right-leaners of this country and of Russia make better friends than enemies.

Its also no more accurate to judge a Russian by their government than it is to judge an American the same. Unless you love everything the US government has done in your lifetime, you can't judge the values of Russians by the actions of Russia. Just because less and less Americans look at Russians as enemies doesn't mean they therefore like Putin...

The Russians are embracing collectivism and terror once again this time under Putin.

Anyone who tells you differently is either an American far right hating troll or a Russian e-bot.

    What an intellectual response...

By all accounts, Russia is a State Capitalism... which the US technically became when we started bailing out failing corporations.

What does Russia do that is so different from the US?

Your thread title is inaccurate. Putin didn't choose to assist Republicans. He chose to assist Trump, probably because he has something on Trump. That is why Trump is the first President since Nixon to refuse to release his tax returns. Putin wanted Trump as our next President and Trump is coming through for him.

Trump was subservient to Putin at Helsinki. Trump has fallen in love with the leader of Putin's ally, Kim Jong Un. Trump has threatened the NATO alliance, a partnership of free nations to restrain Russia. Trump has angered the leaders of the free world, Britain's May, Canada's Trudeau, France's Macron, and Germany's Merkel. His trade war with China is threatening the American economy. Trump removed the U.S. from an agreement that permanently barred Iran from making a nuke. Iran is another Russian ally.

A Russian agent couldn't do any better than Trump, according to Putin's way of thinking.

Nope. Im not OK when we do it to other nations either. We are the undisputed heavyweight champions of foreign electioneering. I find little sympathy for those who bitch about it being done to us but don't care if we do it to others.
