Some of the land near the coast where cities are located is "sinking" (actually eroding) because sediments which replenish coastal lands are settling out in dams built on rivers. In other cases the sheer weight of buildings and infrastructure is causing sinking.

There is much more information in chapter 10 of the free reference linked below:

It's actually tilting as well. We may soon have the leaning city of Venice.

Universities are paid to study AGW. So that's what they do. They don't actually study global warming both current and historical.

Correct, drluggit... AGW is most definitely a religion. The beliefs of the Church of Global Warming all stem from the truth assumption that "the Earth is warming". We simply do not know whether the Earth is warming, cooling, or staying the same temperature. We do not have near enough thermometers to even begin such a statistical analysis, and satellites do not measure absolute temperature.

Yes, most if not all our coastal cities were built before it was possible to easily transport massive amounts of fill.

Do you know how they hardened Foggy Bottom in DC?
And is it too late to reverse the decision?

I thought they built the place on existing islands in those salt marshes.
It was a desperation move - did they really have the resources to haul in fill rubble while the barbarians were at their heels?

Yes, but in many cases the original towns have expanded using landfill. The Manhattan Burrough of NYC is a good example.

I though Manhattan was on solid rock. Is that why they call lower Manhattan lower? ;-)

Manhattan/NYC has grown over the years. There is an interactive showing maps from the last 250 years showing the growth.

Tyvm for sharing that good source and the story of the expansion of Manhattan.
All that excavation and all that trash created a lot of New New York.

The progressives may want to excavate to remove all the plastic straws in the landfill.
