I watch an average amount of news on cable TV and the internet, and I don't think I've seen an AIDS related story since Freddie Mercury died.

Tens of thousands are diagnosed every year, still, and the patients are still mostly gay men. Why isn't it news anymore? I know there are drugs, but it's still deadly.

Because the root word of “news” Is “new”. There’s still vast amounts being said and discussed on the topic, it just generally doesn’t make mainstream news so you’re unlikely to see it in passing. There was some coverage as the “Prep” preventive drug became available because that was a new (and somewhat controversial) thing and newly published statistics occasionally grab (fairly meaningless) headlines. It isn’t a big mystery anymore and not shifting or developing anything like as much as it once was so there isn’t much actual news.

I’m curious what other mainstream coverage you’d expect to see about this issue specifically and whether the same principle would apply to the thousands of other similar topics.
