Why should people be forced to get the vaccine in order to protect others who choose not to get it?

    There's been quite a bit of discussion in the media about a 'vaccine MANDATE.' New York City Mayor Bill DeBlassio LOVES the idea. But the question arises - once everyone has had a chance to get vaccinated, why should people be forced to get vaccinated in order to protect others who choose not to get vaccinated?

    A good question.

    Not sure if a blanket mandate is the right call here.
    But if one were going to consider it, or something lesser like requiring the vaccine in order to do xyz...
    Then there are likely going to be two key reasons:

    1. People who get sick with Covid fill up the hospitals, clinics, and emergency rooms en-masse, creating way more patients than those facilities are typically designed to handle, costing taxpayers money, and taking up room which would otherwise be used for people with more common health emergencies.

    2. If the virus is allowed to indefinitely circulate among large populations unchecked, then mutations are likely to occur (such as has already occurred with this Delta thing), which can lead to ever deadlier and or more contagious strains of the virus that are more effective at surviving and replicating. Such mutations may eventually circumvent current vaccinations, threatening not only the unvaccinated but even the currently vaccinated as well.

    ...There may be more reasons that just those two, but those are what I could think of off the top of my head.

    meta answered pretty well above.

    the idea is that if we can stop this from circulating long enough that those who have it either stop spreading it or die. it requires the horrible sacrifice of wearing masks and not spreading the damn thing. vaccination appears to offer the best chance of a milder case and continued life,

    but in the end, i think you should be free to remain in a death cult if that is your religion.

    Why is the government trying to tell people what to do with their bodies? Aren't they aware of Roe v Wade?

    A mandate is not force, it's a choice. Get the vax or you will be subjected to covid tests twice per week. In some areas, the choice is get the vax or don't show up for work.

    The federal government cannot force anyone to vaccinate, nor should anyone force anyone to do any medical procedure, though they are allowed to put pressure on folks with mandates to promote safety and save lives.

    I believe the vaccinated won't spread it as much, but I'll have to check the facts on that.

    To end the pandemic?
    To protect those like children and the immune comprimised who can't take the vaccine?
    To show they are willing to make a sacrifice to end the crowds in the hospital emergency rooms?
    to hasten business recovery?
    To make sure school students won't have to wear masks all day?

    I am sure there are people who can't take the vaccine, but I do not understand the people who don't want to get it for political reasons when getting it might help do all the other things they want to happen economically etc.
