Why was the 2009 pandemic not taken ANYWHERE NEAR as seriously as COVID-19? Does anyone remember ANY talk about washing hands or social distancing? I certainly don't! I get that COVID-19 is far more infectious, but I don't understand why it takes this level of infection to promote basic prevention methods. The 2009 pandemic on average killed 40 years olds! So if that had been more serious, it would have DRASTICALLY affected society. Any ideas?

Maybe there was not an idiot calling it a hoax to bring attention to it.

Because it wasn't as serious an outbreak. It wasn't as infectious, partly fundamentally and partly because it had consistent and rapid-onset of symptoms which led to infectious patients to naturally "self-isolate". That meant it did spread anything like as rapidly or extensively. It was also generally less serious, meaning many fewer patients required hospitalisation so the impact on healthcare systems wasn't a significant and it's a better understood virus and so there were established treatments available from the outset.

Trump, the president of low expectations, initially called the pandemic a hoax. He claimed there were fifteen patients, soon to be zero. He claimed news of a pandemic was a hoax. Just something brought up to ruin his presidency. Something about a perfect phone call.

Funny how you didn't notice. But maybe that is how propaganda works. A couple of weeks ago y'all were claiming there was nothing to this virus. That everyone was over playing the threat, as apparently a large swatch of conservatives seem to still be claiming. Once the threat became real conservidom is denying what it said yesterday and y'all follow along singing the same old song. I didn't say it. Even though everyone heard it. Even caught it in on tape. But I didn't say it. La laa, la laaaaaa.

Can Trump really be both the most hated President in American history and have effective propaganda to reach millions of Americans? In truth, COVID-19 took everyone by surprise. As Dr. Fauci said a day or so ago, the virus's behavior in America was completely different to its behavior in China, and its behavior in Italy was different to China. Some have speculated that weight/obesity is playing a factor, and it very well might.

In humor, we might call COVID-19 the Bloomberg disease, in honor of his soda ban lol.

It wasn't an election year with a media bent on taking down Trump.

don't remember the medical needs being at risk of not meeting demands like in this case, don't remember being short ventilators or medical gear as we are now

Trump was slow to take seriously, add that to the fact that the entire world is effected, fighting over the same supplies

I don't know anyone that claims that Trump is a public health expert. He is trying to prevent or reduce panic. Yes, he is doing that badly but it is better than stoking the panic like the media does.

Then you'd be wrong. Other countries that were slow to respond are paying for it now. Italy and Spain are not hysterical because of the US but because of the 10s of thousands already dead there.
Countries which responded quickly were spared the hysteria. South Korea took the bull by the horns from the get go and did not suffer hysteria just unity of mission.
When H1N1 hit we had a president on TV less than 2 weeks after the first case anywhere telling people to be vigilant, wash their hands often, sneeze into the sleeve and stay home if sick. We had a unity of purpose and that calms enormously. We are getting more stories of people working together towards a common goal, heck even Trump said the word "we" a couple of days ago in stating that if the death toll is kept under 100 000 or 200 000 it will be because "we" did it together. I hope that means that he's catching on that now is not the time for promoting brand Trump but to unify for a common goal. Promote the **** out of himself later but right now WE have work to do.

There is too much hysteria about the hysteria. A few people reacted stupidly, especially early on, but by all accounts things have largely settled down everywhere.

Regardless, you're still wrong. A lot of the same things you've seen in the US (panic buying, limited medical supplies, some people ignoring social distancing rules, politicians trying to take political advantage of the situation) happened elsewhere too. You just don't hear about it there.

Trump supporters tend to believe things that others do not. Trump is only possible because of 40 years of priming from the right wing media. At least half of Americans, when they hear the conservative message, think that it is a bit too looney to take serious, a bit too sleezy. The other half just nods.

well Trump likes to think he is, but agree, no one else does

Trump is causing panic by lying to the people repeatedly, the lie only works if people believe you

I'm not so dogmatic as to believe that everything coming from MSNBC is righteous, or insert media outlet here. In fact, it's why I left the Democratic Party. The dogma of thinking that the Democrat is on the "right side of history", "progressing" to wherever exactly, no one in the party or as a voter even knows.

Joe Biden today symbolizes entirely what the Democrats are: Old, shriveled and unwanted. And we as a Nation need to create a viable replacement for the Democrats. Even if Joe wins, it's a last gasp of air of relevance for Democrats.

Well I did say, "get that COVID-19 is far more infectious." For some reason you cut that out of your quote of me.

No, he did not. Clearly you have your head so far up the fake news media's ASS, you have no idea what you're talking about. He called the DEMOCRATIC RESPONSE TO THE VIRUS AND CRITICISMS OF THE ADMINISTRATION A HOAX! And yes, he DID downplay the virus, but he didn't call it a hoax. Saying that he did IS a hoax!

I'm betting that you will not be able to provide a quote of Trump saying anything REMOTELY like this.

Why the hell is everyone under the impression that Trump not taking it seriously had any impact on what decisions were made by the experts and the administration, CDC and other relevant agencies as a whole? Not to mention the independent decisions of the states.

I was addressing your headline question, which is why that's what I quoted. None of your other comments change my answer. I wasn't looking to get in to another circular discussion with you, more presenting some basic facts for anyone who is interested to read.

    Today 3,173 Deaths in USA

Fauci estimates 200,000 to die in USA

this is completely different than the 2009 epidemic

Trump beginning to realize he can't spin this
