Expat oil guys who have worked in Russia tell me this rings true.

Apparently since the fall of the USSR, European Russians have largely disappeared east of Irkutsk.

I don't think the Russians will fall back much beyond the Ob at Novosibirsk, but if the Chinese can control the Kultuk Gorge (southeast of Irkutsk) the Russian positions east of there are untenable. Ethnically the region east of Irkutsk has always been mostly Asians (Turkmen and Mongols) except at the ports of Vladivostok and Khabarovsk.

The Russians do have a demographic problem but they undeniably view the region between the Urals and the Ob as traditional Russia.

If the Chinese can break out of the Kultuk Gorge (the most formidable and necessary piece of terrain in Asia) and take Irkutsk, the rich mineral area of Krasnoyarsk is pretty much indefensible.

I think the Chinese are a generation away from annexing Maritime Siberia. Russia still has nukes.

Well it's true that most of the world wouldn't be so lackadaisical as the US is about border jumpers. It's the difference between ability and will. We don't have the will, although we have the ability to give them the boot, since we've done it several times in the past century. I just don't think that Russia will have the ability to do the same.

As far as demographics go, Russia is far worse off than the US. The US has the ability although currently not the will, to tailor our legal immigration in such a way as to recruit all of the educated and skilled young people from all over the globe that we need. Russia isn't much of an immigrant destination.

What I have heard from the television interview of most Chinese working in Russia and other countries is that they always keep themselves in low profile, out of trouble and away from the sight of the police.
