They had wokeness in 1999. That’s just not what it was called. It was referred to as “political correctness” then.

I always told people “political correctness was a disease… like a cancer… on an otherwise healthy societal system”. I was right. It metastasized into wokeness and it’s killing us.

Well I suppose I could start a multiple year circle jerk over an “insurrection” involving approximately 2000-3000 mostly unarmed people and tear sackcloth and rub ashes on my forehead as if I were in mourning over what I loudly declare as the most prolific threat our country has faced since the civil war (which ended in the death of over a million Americans) by those 2,000 people.

But no I’m not being hyperbolic. It’s killing us and you will watch it do so. In fact you will be one of those to blame.

Right because you’re doing so much to stop the “killing of us”. You really are melodramatic.

It wasn't a little bit; that was the entire show.

The only good thing about this is that if Hollyweird wants to blow their money on this **** and then dump it in the garbage, so be it.

That's what I heard. Plus, I hear they judged Batgirl as not living up to their corporate direction of a major motion picture.

What does a "woke" movie mean?

Is it that women are treated as if they are strong or competent?

I kind of already address this in numerous other post in this thread but just to quickly summarize: (These points were taken from reddit, comic forums, and articles)
    • The movie had one screening. It tested in the 60s which is the same score that Shazam 2 had which is still going forward. IT which grossed over $700M also had the same score. Also the Batgirl screening was of an incomplete film. It had missing special effects and the music score had not been added. Assuming those are good it could easily have raised the final score.
    • Discovery merged with Warner Bros in April and since then there appears to be a new direction concerning the commitments with their DC properties and HBO Max
    • Batgirl was intended for release on the HBO Max streaming service. The new execs wanted to instead consider releasing it to the theaters. The talk was it was not "Big" or "Theatrical" enough to be a success at the theaters. They consider re-shooting some parts but nix the idea when the cost of the re-shoots and advertising for the movie would cost upwards of $100M.
    • Rumors were the new corporate direction does not support the HBO Max streaming strategy. They cancelled the Wonder Twins movie about a month earlier and other HBO Max productions could be at risk. They appear to want to stick to major motion picture releases at theaters. That is why Shazam 2 and the Flash still appear to be on track while productions like Penguin and Blue Beetle are up in the air.
    • I follow a lot of comic forum, reddits and website. The majority of the "wokeness" speculation comes from here and things the the social justice rags like the Daily Mail. All the other sites at talking about the Discovery merger and the new direction they are taking with HBO Max.
So maybe use this as an example. Ask why all of the serious discussion is talking about corporate direction, actual decisions that are being made by Warner/Discovery, real press releases, real test numbers, and everyone here is focused on the speculation of wokeness?

Having gay or trans characters in your show or movie is not "woke". Gay and trans people exist, you're allowed to have them in your stories without it being some grand political statement or social engineering.

And this too may come as shock to some, but you don't need wokeness in your movie for it to be a BAD movie.

However, I will agree that it's usually stupid when you try to switch around an established character like they did with Batgirl. But that's not enough to ruin an entire movie. If the movie was well done, the character change would just be a minor irritation.

Was Batgirl suppose to be gay in this movie? I am more of a Marvel guy so I only know some basic info about DC heroes but I had thought I had heard she had been bi-sexual in comics for more than a decade. I can't confirm since I do not read her comics but I do know in the movies like "The Killing Joke" she slept with Batman and in the "Titans" TV series she used to date Robin. The only sexual orientation thing I heard about this movie is one of the supporting characters is trans as well as the actor that portrays her.

To be honest, I had seen that mentioned in this thread and assumed that was the case. I could easily be wrong.

I think a lot of people are mixing up Batgirl with CW's Batwoman.

Could be reporters got confused with the massive correlation between woke messaging and garbage scripts that they heard it was garbage and thus presumed woke.

It may be possible, or 'allowed' as you say, but that's not what Hollywood does.

    They openly say it.

    That's why it's objectionable.

It's possible. I assume any "woke" project subordinates story to current agenda.

Thing is, stories with liberal social commentary didn't used to always suck. Early Star Trek had both social commentary and entertaining writing.

and it didn’t feel forced, either. Quality sci-fi.

we had a movie about woke stupidity years ago, PCU with Jeremy Piven!

No, she is not bi-sexual in the comics.

Harley Quinn is and the cartoon series incorporated that

Batwoman was always portrayed as a lesbian in the comics

Personally, I really don't care, I just want to see interesting storylines with good villains and action scenes. I was in the minority that liked Batwoman

The real issue is that the DCEU has just been a mess from day 1.

That's a whole 'nuther thread, in which Batgirl is simply a symptom.

Thanks for that. I was not 100% sure since I do not really follow the DC comics. I thought I had read on reddit or somewhere she was bi-sexual but was not sure. That aligns more with the animated movies and the Titans TV series.

Nichelle Nichols died this last July 30, and it seems more than appropriate to note her achievement here.

As part of the original cast in 1965, she was a black woman fully qualified to take the helm of the starship Enterprise - something she did in at least one episode. That was clearly "woke" for the time.

She handed in her resignation to Gene Rodenberry after season 1. MLK Jr, heard of that, and met with her to tell her that she had to continue - it was just too important in the context of that era to have a competent black female role. Whoopie Goldberg has talked about Nichols' role.

She and Capt Kirk had the first biracial kiss, at least on US TV. She and Shatner wanted it to be a real kiss, and the production wasn't interested. The director made them do the scene something like 15 times, with Nichols and Shatner screwing up every take except the one they wanted.

I don't believe we know why Batgirl was dropped. I have a hard time believing that it had to do with sexual orientation.

Exactly...It was strictly a financial decision...
Totally LMAO at the insinuation that scrapping of the film had anything (whatsoever) to do with "woke" or "wokeness"...

Maybe they realized that the homophilia executives are turning away their audiences with their insistence that deviant behaviors be presented as normal behaviors and those engaging in them making up more than the 1% of the population and trying to indoctrinate people into such beliefs.
