About 200 ethnic Uyghurs from around the world gathered in Tokyo on May 14 for a five-day World Uyghur Conference to press their case for independence from China. Japanese lawmakers from the centre-right opposition Liberal Democratic Party were at the meeting, along with an Italian politician and US rights activists.

Besides protesting to the Japanese parliament, the National Diet, by the Chinese ambassador, China also cancelled meetings between President Hu Jintao and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda on May 14, as well as a separate meeting between China's foreign minister, Yang Jiechi, and Hiromasa Yonekura, chairman of Sumitomo Chemical and the Japan Business Federation.

There are separatist movements in almost every country. Instead of the useless routine protests, China should adopt a tit-for-tat strategy against those countries that provide aid and shelter to the Chinese separatists. In retaliation, the Chinese authorities should let independence movements from hostile countries hold regular conferences in China.

Geographically, it is very difficult for a landlocked region to gain independence. Even if it could become independent, it would be very difficult for it to achieve economic progress. Just imagine how to export timber to the outside world. By air?

Wed, May 29, 2013 - Ethnic minorities in Xinjiang are far more fond of dancing, singing and being good hosts than making trouble, a top official said yesterday, dismissing the idea that the far western region is a hotbed of unrest.

I thought this said "World Ugly Conference in Tokyo" which would be pretty Tokyo. The people there are either really beautiful or really ugly in my experience.
