Ha! Kind of like a school assignment to write a letter to your parents about becoming a National Socialist during the blitz!

"The Brits" is a vast generalisation. We're talking a smallish loony class of deranged leftists. They have this bullshit much worse in the US in the education sector.

Yeah, because converting people to a religion is totally the place of school. If muslims would be forced to do homework "why I convert to christianism", that would have been a major scandal.

That is exactly what they do, its part of the national curricula, write a letter to your family as if you have converted Christianity/Muslim, depending on which religion you belong to and have studied. In my day it was Catholicism/Anglican.

Nothing to do with converting people!

what IS it for, then? 'breaking down barriers'?

break down barriers by having all kids - regardless of colour or religion - dressed the same and treated the same.

Religious Education, you learn about three world faiths, Christianity,Islam and Hinduism.By writing a letter about another faith as if you have converted you show what you have learnt about that religion. My stepson did a letter about Christian, he is atheist Jew. My daughter did a letter about Hinduism, she is a Christian.

I would be the first person screaming about being asked to convert,I hate faith schools with a passion. But this was Religious Education.

In any case, It's for me inappropriate. But I'm french, and we're used to deal with priest and religion with guillotine and kicks in the backside.

I'm afraid we're in meltdown, and although I don't know what it will be, I fear what's around the corner for us. In a nutshell, our problem is that bureaucrats (who now run this country and I curse them all) always do what is the easy thing, and in this case it's easier to propitiate Islam than deal with its threat. It's all a part of the insanity which is now rampant in the UK.

I admire the french secular state, but if this dad really wants to get annoyed about something, then start with government funded faith schools. That is truly a disgrace. We the tax payers in the UK pay to have kids indoctrinated with religion, parents pretend to be believers to get their kids into "better" schools!

Don't you think that in this day and age there is a wider issue to consider; insofar as security forces are very vigilant towards those seeking to radicalise young children? It all sounds very innocent and I am sure that there was no ulterior motive, however, the UK is on a heightened state of security as a direct result of Islamic terrorism, even muslim communities are being asked to look out for and monitoring radicalisation, is this not the sort of thing that would tweek the interest of the security forces?

It may be only a creative writting exersize but in this day and age do you not question the thought processes at work? Did the teacher actually stop and think about this; that this would NOT incite comments from parents? Is the teacher prepared to be watched by the security forces?

As I said this is part of the national curriculum, exactly this exercise is being done up and down the country in RE classes, it would not be the teacher it will be part of the syllabus. I did something very similar to this in 1972 only I had to imagine being a catholic, think about that for a minute. I lived in Bristol at the time, the IRA had just bombed Park Street, it actually made me think how stupid religion was!

And rightly so, that is just the sort of thing that needs reporting, I wonder if this letter business is not to draw out those radicalised?
It would be a clever way of doing it, so I doubt the government thought of it!

    Kids already do.
Racism and religion is big joke for kids. They aren't born with any prejudices at all.

Their parents prejudice's are not shared by them. Kids at school are not marred by this bullshit. It's just some Guardian readers trying to be the high priests of morality. And the Daily Mail preying on the ridiculous excesses of it that they find. The silly news. You wouldn't believe a person could be so stupid as this... and yet we all do ridiculously stupid things ourselves and daily.
It's just their teachers prejudices and the mark of a bad teacher to pass them on.

The mark of bad school system even. The mark of indoctrination.
The role of schools is not to socially manipulate agenda's.
Not even ones you think are so morally obvious that they cannot be ignored.
That is an abuse of power. To over step the authority granted you by a parent over their children and it undermines the key requisite for me to do my job.

    Trust.

If you make me teach contentious issues, parents will be seen at home to disapprove or disagree with my teachings.
We will be undermining each others authority and not reinforcing it.

I will not work in this environment. Take my advice. Avoid teaching in the state sector like it is the plague. Bad culture.
