I can forgive Pastor Margaret Court all of her other homophobic crimes in the course of her duties, but her 'endorsement' of conversion therapy is inexcusable. One of the most important roles any cleric in any church, synagogue or mosque will perform, is as a faith based family and crisis counselor. You just have to 'get it right 'when a family comes to you for guidance, and selling 'conversion therapy' and prayer for gender identity or sexual orientation issues, is malpractice, no matter how many times you elicit a deity as an endorsement.

Could care less if she endorses same sex marriage, but to refer any struggling family to a conversion therapist is disgusting and shameful.

Yeah that's sadly all-too-common. My partner came from a home like that. I actually met him at his lowest point. I didn't realize it at the time. We went to couple therapists together. I don't know if a person that goes through that will ever find peace with it completely.

I'm every bit as critical of religion in that same regard, so you are in good company in that, that is if you consider me good company. Lol

I’ve encountered Ms Court face to face - she doesn’t deserve the title ‘Pastor’ as her understanding of scripture in general is a tangled mess of ignorance and fundamentalist misinterpretation. My impression, gained from her emotional reaction to my attempt to discuss her approach to ‘cure by prayer therapy’ is she somehow has a deep seated psychological aversion to the idea of same sex attraction, not just a simplistic misinterpretation of scripture.

Actually Margaret was raised catholic, but there was not a hint of any of this during her playing career. She may have been a tad on the conservative side for the women's liberation movement ' , but she never said squat about her politics or religion back then. She was seen as taciturn, almost bashful on the tour.

If you asked about her reputation, she was seen as a wonderful role model for any young woman. Court was adamant that she control her own career, instead of the men sitting on the Australian Tennis Federation. She worked as hard as Laver, Rosewall etc on her conditioning. she was the first woman ever to include weight lifting and strength training despite its 'masculine' reputation. Margaret was a total class act on the tennis court. I doubt she even knew what homosexuality was, until King came out. But when Court was 'born again' as an evangelical fundamentalist pastor a decade aafter she retired, she turned into this.

She was an entirely different person as a tennis player. What ever you sensed in Court , she was turned into, long after she left the catholic church. Somebody did quite a number radicalizing Mrs Court.

Let’s blame the Holy Spirit. I suspect she does.

I had to look her up, never heard of her, she belongs to a Christian denomination called Pentecostal. I'm quite familiar with this group. They take one translation of the Bible not just literal but as though it was good himself speaking.

Seems a common thread among a lot of fundamentalist Christians.

You’ve really thrown the cat amongst the pigions honey. How do you know what 'GOD himself speaking' sounds like? Have you been keeping something from us? The Gospel according to St Polydectes?

Sometimes I wish I could relate some of what I hear on the phone from early teenagers about their parents attitude to gays’
I can’t for obvious reasons but sometimes like today it breaks my heart.

My sad attempt at being funny. When you wrote "They take one translation of the Bible not just literal but as though it was good himself speaking.”
It took you to be hinting you yourself knew what God sounded like speaking which would make you a prophet of some kind. So offence intended.

No offense was taken. And it was my assumption that you were trying to be funny. Using the word good when I met God.

I just didn't want you to think that I was a Pentecostal.

Your child says I'm gay. What do you do?

Ask them about their day, talk to him/her about going out for team sports. Ask them if they brushed their teeth before going to bed. Talk to my child about the dangers of drugs, smoking and alcohol abuse. Talk to my child about that C- they received on their math test last week. Basically I would do exactly the same as if my child never told me that they were gay, and furthermore I would infatically tell my child that I love them very very much and how much I appreciate them coming to me with their feelings.

Your pal is gay. He's having problems in his marriage because of that.

Straight young blokes don't fool around with their mates.

I would say most know by 14. But it's important to remember that there are plenty of young people who don't stop to consider such a thing in the first place. They don't even recognise it as a question to be asked.

This coming out to the family thing is handled so badly by both sides sometimes. Strained or dysfunctional relationships are almost never improved by this news, while stable and strong ones sometimes can be. If the familial dynamic tends towards weaponizing events, then you can be sure that this process will be weaponized as well. If the familial dynamic rewards melodrama then that is what you will find here. If the relationships are characterized by trust and respect you will probably end up with those same characteristics eventually determining what happens after this disclosure.

castrati perhaps. Every normal human being most certainly does. It's really the only reason we have a society at all.
That's one of the dumbest things you have ever said.

I hope you're being facetious. If not, I hope to gawd you never have a child who is gay and tells you so when they decide it's time.

Do you think people are born lesbian? I think people are born gay, but lesbians dont look and sound a unique way like gay men do. I was talking to a friend on if people are born gay, and I said that women who are in abusive relationships become gay, and she didnt agree with that being the cause of women becoming gay.

On the contrary, it's spectacularly naive to not realise that there are many cultures and societies in which it doesn't exist as a question for 99.9% of young people. It simply doesn't occur to them to 'consider' sexuality, any more than it occurs to them consider oxygen dependence.

You are seriously lacking in worldliness, Poly. Have you travelled much? Spent time in living in non-Western cultures, etc?

Abuse. Lack of confidence with men. Being fat. Having an 'awkward' personality. Etc. But it's rarely the physical impediments ... since fat and ugly girls still find husbands easily enough.

IOW, it's quite unusual to find a confident, attractive, male-friendly, well adjusted woman who is a genuine lesbian. Plenty of faux lesbians like Miley Cyrus.
