Italians always carry with them the "Identity Card", in case a police officer asks for documents [here they ask for documents, not papers].
The political fusing of immigration and border control made me angry enough but this really gets my goat. They are two utterly different things. It's just more confusion so they can swamp us with economic migrants.

The conservatives joined the third Reich when the movement got powerful enough. Imo they ended up being the sickest elements of it. The Nazis weren't so much evil, as ruthless and rough. It was only when they fused with the old guard conservatives that they became an enemy of the people. People are too relaxed about them.
There are different types of Conservatives. It is definitely not a homogenous group, though they do tend to share some elements in common. Only a subset of this group is cruel and heartless, maybe 20-40%. As far as totalitarianism, from what I've seen Progressives can be just as totalitarian-minded as Conservatives. Back to the topic, unfortunately what the likely outcome of all these policies will be is the worst of both worlds—both a police state with invasive checkpoints and a continued failure to affect any real change on immigration. Just look to the U.S. to see what is happening there.
Perhaps the ABF is trying to crack down on illegal immigrants outside their normal work areas such as ports of entry to identify some people, who may be staying in the country illegally with expired visas. London's Chinatown has been targeted by immigration officers in recent years under the Tory government and there are indeed a lot of undocumented workers in the Chinese communities.
Well it never happened, but if its what they were intending then it seems a strange idea..... but I doubt it's got anything to do with the politics of government at either state or federal level. Why the need to foam at the mouth and blame Abbott whenever someone silly happens is pretty childish. If you really wanted to damage the LNP you should have let it happen and then really made a fuss/protest, since it would have been such a stupid idea to do what the lefty mob claim was going to happen. But in reality, politicians don't plan these sorts of things, public servants within the relevant departments do.

And anyway, I thought your immigrants were detained on some island or other while checks are made as to who they are, and why they want to enter Australia? That seemed perfectly sensible to me. Yes! Finally! I've long complained that in Australia any police officer can pull me over for any reason and demand to have my details. Hopefully we are able to truly remain silent without legal repercussions in the future. Oddly, I've always got more opposition on this from the left than the right.
