Depending on where on the head the shots are, it's entirely possible to shoot oneself in the back of the head. Most of the time, people depend on the notion that the arm cannot move into that position. However, turn you head to the side, and you can see that it can be done without contortions. The second shot is a tad bit harder though.

There have been many instances where people have been shot in the head and lived. For example.

Most recently.

I seem to remember seeing something on the news a few years ago where a kid got shot in the head with a large caliber hand gun and lived as well.

Granted, these are one in a million things, but it does happen.

A head shot does not always mean death.

Additionally. I do not see anything that says how many times or where he was shot in what was posted.
