Congressional Record: September 26, 2002 (Senate)

HOMELAND SECURITY

In September 1998, the Intelligence Community obtained information that Usama Bin Laden's next operation could involve flying an aircraft loaded with explosives into a U.S. airport and detonating it; this information was provided to senior U.S. Government officials in late 1998.

In the fall of 1998, the Intelligence Community received additional information concerning a Bin-Laden plot involving aircraft in the New York and Washington, DC, areas;

In November 1998, the Intelligence Community learned that a Bin Laden was attempting to recruit a group of five to seven young men from the United States to strike U.S. domestic targets.

In the spring of 1999, the Intelligence Community learned about a planned Bin Laden attack on a U.S. Government facility in Washington, DC.

Additionally, in 1999, the threat of an explosive-laden aircraft being used in a suicide attack against the Pentagon, CIA headquarters, or the White House, was noted in a Library of Congress report to the National Intelligence Council.

In late 1999, the Intelligence Community learned of Bin Laden's possible plans to attack targets in Washington, DC, and New York City during the New Year's Millennium celebrations.

On December 14, 1999, an individual named Ahmed Ressam was arrested as he attempted to enter the United States from Canada with detonator materials in his car. Ressam's intended target was Los Angeles International Airport. Ressam, who has links to Usama Bin Laden's terrorist network, has not been formally sentenced yet.

In March 2000, the Intelligence Community obtained information regarding the types of targets that operatives in Bin Laden's network might strike. The Statue of Liberty was specifically mentioned, as were skyscrapers, ports, and airports, and nuclear power plants.

May be the Clinton Admin should have concentrated on Bin Laden, but they seemed to believe Saddam was involved by the information from JP5's post. He was their focal point.

If Obama couldn't lead such a small organization as the Chicago Annenberg Challenge to success, how can any one bellieve he can lead this country to it?

Yes, checks and balances for governing.

When Chicken Little Bush screams to the world repeatedly that Iraq is rearming and targeting the US b/c they are in cahoots with Al Qaeda (right on the heels of the 9/11 attacks), that's a different story.

Was the congress negligent in not reading the NIE? Yes

Does that make Bush's push for war under false pretenses ok? No. Bush still must be held accountable for his (and his administration's) fraudulent push for war.

The CIA figured out NOTHING about him.

More intelligence breakdown. We never even had his real name.We had no cooperation from the Germans.CIA never even got to meet with him.Its never cut and dried.

Some in the CIA 'expressed' some doubt based on some german memos, some didnt based on other german intel and the mans ID was hardly debunked immediately.According to Tenet the Germans OKd the intel and in the end it was false....like so much else in this chapter.

If he was so easily dismissed as a fraud by Germany (who was the only possible source for the CIA) why hide him? Why send some messages stating doubt and others expressing faith in his claims?

I don't care.

Curveball's German intelligence handlers saw him as "crazy ... out of control", his friends called him a "congenital liar", and US officials investigating his claims were surprised that he had a hangover and that he "might be an alcoholic".[13]

(Those are signs of a credible witness)

The Bush administration ignored evidence from the UN weapons inspectors that Curveball's claims were false. (What a shock! Ignoring countervailing evidence) Curveball had identified a particular Iraqi facility as a docking station for mobile labs. Satellite photography had showed a wall made such access impossible, but it was theorised that this wall was temporary. "When United Nations Monitoring Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC) inspectors visited the site on February 9, 2003, they found that the wall was a permanent structure and could find nothing to corroborate Curveball's statements."[16] Instead, the inspectors found the warehouse to be used for seed processing.[17]

Curveball was a poor conman that the Bush Administration ran with b/c he told them what they wanted to hear.
