A person can insulate themselves from suffering by taking no risks. For example not asking that person you like out, for fear of them saying no, or not having another pet for fear of losing the pet and experiencing grief. However life without risk, is well............

dull.

Instead of focusing on the grief, focus on the joy your pet gave you in it's life. Why deny yourself of that again?

I've been through it several times, including two I had to have put to sleep. I just tell myself they had long, happy lives. Just like any other loss, time is the great healer. There are so many wonderful dogs at the SPCA waiting for a family to love. Adopting one is a gift that pays back a hundredfold.

I have had three rescue Sheps, Asia was the last and had been badly abused, she had been cornered by kids and set on fire with a small "molotov" she was crazy when the shelter called me and a friend, we have had 10 sheps in total between us! she returned to her former glory, but was very protective.

I am going to try to scan and post some pics.

We have to spend a lot of time with my Mum now so it would be unfair to the dog and my Mum

Yes, there are plenty of animals that need to find a special home that gives them love and affection especially after they have had hard times.

Although my front garden now has 2 of my pets, (my first cat and my first dog) buried within it, I felt that we here at Lunecat Towers had a suitable home for another pet. This time I went to the dogs trust and spotted a collie cross that had be rehomed 3 times but returned and was one of their longest residents!

They called her "susie" but I have renamed her to "suzy" can't let her off the lead, she hates strangers, cars, motor bikes and cycles, areoplanes and flies and don't even go near her when she has a nice juicy bone to chew and protect.

Although she is mad - she is also friendly to me so I keep her round as I don't like flies either.

I'm with you there. I have a whole page of dog quotes up on my wall at work (next to all the photos of my dogs and cats and Max etc) and I thought you and others here might relate to a couple;

`There is no psychiatrist in the world like a puppy licking your face'

`We give dogs time we can spare, space we can spare and love we can spare. And in return, dogs give us their all. It's the best deal man has ever made'

`The great pleasure of a dog is that you make a fool of yourself with him, and not only will he not scold you, he will make a food of himself too'

`Properly trained, a man can be dog's best friend'

`Dogs are our link to paradise. They don't know evil or jealousy or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring - it was peace'

And my absolute favourite - I can never read it without misting up;

`He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion'
