I'm a Republican, but I am certainly not a neo-conservative @$$#*!&. As anyone who reads history knows, our Founding Fathers hotly debated many issues including making George Washington king after the revolution and spouting remarks which prompted several duels (Hamilton v. Burr being a popular one**). Of one thing I am certain; many of our most radical Republicans today would have been called Tories in 1775.

**Besides me, who's in favor of bringing back dueling but restricting it to politicians, news commentators and other celebrity mud slingers? We'd broadcast them on Saturday nights and sell tickets to help pay off the national debt created by those who also grant themselves pay raises and the best health care system in the world.
Great post. Have you ever been to Williamsburg were they re-enact the Colonial Capital and you go back to the reign of George III? It gives you a sense of how radical those times were and how important ideas were. These were days when Common Sense could turn a ragbag of colonies into a mighty nation. With my (British) kids enlisted to fight the Redcoats I mused that this was an everyday place from history, with radicalism pushing it onwards. And scary too, to set your face against the world's superpower. It took idealism and courage to make the United States of America. But it is a real place, where Patriots and Tories still play out their battles on a daily basis.

At the Naval Shipyard? I never made it up that way myself. Just Jacksonville-Mayport and Norfolk in the Navy. MCAS Tustin and Okinawa in the Marine Corps.

I'm sorry to have missed that one. While Europe has several hundred years of history, ours is only a little over 200 years old and we cherish what little we have. Although I've never made the reenactments you mentioned, I've been to a few Civil War reenactments.

Thanks. I lived in Mannheim for three years as a kid and visited Bangkok once. Both places are good memories for me.

Yes, there's lots of Texans on here and we all seem to be proud to show the flag! A get-together could be fun, especially if some are kayakers. Lots of lakes and reservoirs around here for boaters.

Hot and humid is underestimating the climate! I frequently travel to Corpus and Brownsville. It is like a whole other country down there in terms of heat and humidity.

tell me about it. hey, theres a kayaking thing here every year. its a huge deal. you should come. last year i was at work one night and it was close to closing, these 3 guys came in and asked if we were open. the waiter told them we were closed. i was hostessing that night. i came around the corner as they were leaving, i stopped them and told them id be glad to wait on them. (as hostess i wait the tables in the bar) so, they go say ok, let us go get the rest of our group. lol. i was thinking, "hey i can handle 3 more tonight." turns out they had 9 more with them. they ate, drank (lots) and had a merry time. as they left they thanked me for allowing them in at closing because they were grateful for real food after eating spam and bread for 3 days under an bridge. you guessed it. kayakers. plus, they tipped me 200 bux!!!
