Are Tax Cuts Enough?
For a few years and continuing into 2006, our Crat governor and Pub legislature in Michigan have been back and forth about tax cuts for business. The Pubs seem to think it's a cure-all. The gov's rejection is based only on the fact that tax cuts could lead to cuts in other services (Mich has a balanced budget ammendment).
I don't think tax cuts would hurt. New business would bring in new revenue. But since the goal is to attract high-paying jobs, I don't believe tax cuts are enough. Michigan's capitol is veered toward manufacturing. Our education rate (related to this fact) is shameful, despite all our universities.
In order to attract good jobs, as opposed to more lousy service jobs or more dead-end manufacturing jobs, we need capitol. Something needs to be done to increase our rate of higher education and of educated people who stay in the state. We could also use some infrastructure that supports better paying jobs.
I've heard some talk about this in the past, but not in a while. Now they just argue about tax cuts. Lame.
