Genetic engineering has been going on for eons as humans select the best seeds, animal breeds and selectively cull out the unwanted varieties.

Monsanto has gone a step further in creating a seed with a specific genome that is resistant to Round Up (a weed killer) so that farmers can spray their Canola fields and kill the weeds with their crop being unaffected. Monsanto sought and received a patent for their genome.

When something is patented, you cannot recreate it, claim is as your own and re-sell it. This is what Schmeiser did.

If you object to this, then you always have the option of campaigning for some kind of legislation to preclude the use of patents in genetic engineering.

Blaming Monsanto for inventing the seed, getting a patent and then enforcing their rights is going to get you nowhere.

Few subjects attract more ire and debate than genetically modified foods--and Monsanto reigns over the entire industry.
The very idea of genetically engineering crops has always made many queasy--and now, literally so. A breakthrough
report from the International Journal of Biological Sciences has just found that three separate kinds of Monsanto's
genetically modified corn causes organ damage in rats.

Food Freedom bluntly parses the report: "In what is being described as the first ever and most comprehensive study
of the effects of genetically modified foods on mammalian health, researchers have linked organ damage with consumption
of Monsanto's GM maize." Woops. All three of the kinds of corn have been approved by numerous food safety boards,
and are widely available in the United States, Europe, and elsewhere.

From the study, which was carried out by the Committee of Independent Research and Information on Genetic Engineering:

The data "clearly underlines adverse impacts on kidneys and liver, the dietary detoxifying organs,
as well as different levels of damages to heart, adrenal glands, spleen and haematopoietic system,"
-reported Gilles-Eric Séralini, a molecular biologist at the University of Caen.

Scary stuff--this may be the first time that such distinctly adverse health effects have been confirmed by science
(the first paper making similar claims surfaced in 2007

The conclusion of the report? That the "raw data from all three GMO studies reveal novel pesticide residues will be present
in food and feed and may pose grave health risks to those consuming them," according to Food Freedom. Let's just reiterate
that last part again: the pesticide residues will be present in food, and may pose grave health risks to anything
--or anyone--eating them.

In the scientific study, the researchers have called for

.."an immediate ban on the import and cultivation of these GMOs and strongly recommend additional
long-term (up to two years) and multi-generational animal feeding studies on at least three species to provide
true scientifically valid data on the acute and chronic toxic effects of GM crops, feed and foods."

This is Big News !
If this data does prove conclusive, it could be the most persuasive evidence yet that GMO cultivation is dangerous.

Yet Americans are living longer and are healthier into old age even though they have been eating all this 'evil' stuff. Moreover, these genetically modified foods increase crop yields. Many foods/plants and even animals have been genetically modified.

I know there are studies that say yields are not increased in certain food varieties by GM seeds however one needs to look at the folks doing the research closely. There are studies showing conflicting outcomes..

Soybeans, corn, cotton, alfalfa, Hawaiian papaya, tomatoes, rapeseed (canola), sugar cane, sugar beet, rice, squash, sweet peppers....

Most of these are developed to be resistant to disease, pest infestation, herbicides, etc. Studies have shown increased crop yields which is why environmentalists who believe in over population are against GM seeds. They feel that there should be no more food than the current population can consume...In effect, it's OK of some folks don't have adequate food because that limits population growth.

I do not subscribe to letting folks starve.

Glyphosate, commonly known as Roundup, is the world's most widely used herbicide. It is estimated that for 1998, over a 112,000 tonnes of glyphosate was used world-wide. 71% of genetically engineered crops planted in 1998 are designed to be resistant to herbicides such as glyphosate, marketed by Monsanto as Roundup. Companies developing herbicide resistant crops are also increasing their production capacity for the herbicides such as glyphosate, and also requesting permits for higher residues of these chemicals in genetically engineered food. For example, Monsanto have already received permits for a threefold increase in herbicide residues on genetically engineered soybeans in Europe and the U.S., up from 6 parts per million (PPM) to 20 PPM.

According to Sadhbh O' Neill of Genetic Concern, 'this study reinforces concerns by environmentalists and health professionals that far from reducing herbicide use, glyphosate resistant crops may result in increased residues to which we as consumers will be exposed in our food.'

'Increased residues of glyphosate and its metabolites are already on sale via genetically engineered soya, common in processed foods. However no studies of the effects of GE soya sprayed with Roundup on health have been carried out either on animals or humans to date,'

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) statistics from 1997 show that expanded plantings of Roundup Ready soybeans (i.e. soybeans genetically engineered to be tolerant to the herbicide) resulted in a 72% increase in the use of glyphosate. According to the Pesticides Action Network, scientists estimate that plants genetically engineered to be herbicide resistant will actually triple the amount of herbicides used. Farmers, knowing that their crop can tolerate or resist being killed off by the herbicides, will tend to use them more liberally.

O' Neill concluded:
'The EPA when authorising Monsanto's field trials for Roundup-ready sugar beet did not consider the issue of glyphosate. They considered this to be the remit of the Pesticides Control Service of the Department of Agriculture. Thus nobody has included the effects of increasing the use of glyphosate in the risk/benefit analysis carried out. It is yet another example of how regulatory authorities supposedly protecting public health have failed to implement the 'precautionary principle' with respect to GMOs.'

Good News - Evil Monsanto Finally Reaping Its Just Desserts

Monsanto, the giant biotechnology agriculture company that created genetically modified corn, soybeans and herbicides, isn't riding so high this year in the stocks department, as news comes in that its products aren't working like they'd hoped.

According to the New York Times, weeds are becoming immune to Monsanto's herbicide Roundup, and its latest genetically modified, 8-gene corn is a flop, producing yields no higher than the company's less expensive corn, which contains only three foreign genes.

"Monsanto has already been forced to sharply cut prices on SmartStax and on its newest soybean seeds, called Roundup Ready 2 Yield, as sales fell below projections," the Times said. "And the Justice Department is investigating Monsanto for possible antitrust violations."

"Until now, Monsanto's main challenge has come from opponents of genetically modified crops, who have slowed their adoption in Europe and some other regions. Now, however, the skeptics also include farmers and investors who were once in Monsanto's camp."

Monsanto was named "company of the year" by Forbes Magazine in December. Last week, television stock market commentator Jim Cramer said it "may be the worst stock of 2010," the Times said.

Why is Monsanto top on my hit list of evil corporations? Here is just a short list of the many improprieties and outright crimes committed by Monsanto:

Suing small farmers for patent infringement after Monsanto's GM seeds spread wildly into surrounding farmers' fields, contaminating their conventional crops

Secretly discharging PCB-laden toxic waste into an Alabama creek, and dumping millions of pounds of PCBs into open-pit landfills for decades after PCBs were banned in the US for being a possible carcinogen.

Being found guilty of bribery to bypass Indonesian law requiring an environmental assessment review for its genetically engineered cotton.

Last year, the supreme court of France found Monsanto guilty of falsely advertising its herbicide Roundup as "biodegradable" and "environmentally friendly." Scientific evaluation discovered that glyphosate, the active ingredient in RoundUp, is acutely toxic to fish and birds and can kill beneficial insects and soil organisms that maintain ecological balance. Additionally, the surfactant ingredient in Roundup is more acutely toxic than glyphosate itself, and the combination of the two is even more toxic.

In 2007, the South African Advertising Standards Authority also found Monsanto guilty of lying when advertising that "no negative reactions to Genetically Modified food have been reported."

According to one EPA scientist, Monsanto doctored studies and covered-up dioxin contamination of a wide range of its products. She concluded that the company's behaviour constituted "a long pattern of fraud."
