Gaza Mothers Struggle to Live

In the Name of God the Most Compassionate the Most Merciful
Peace , Mercy & Blessing From Allah (SWT)to You All !!

GAZA STRIP — Sinking into desperation under the US-led economic blockade, Palestinian women go through every day woes to help their families to survive.

"We don't have anything. The children eat the same food as I do. lentils and beans, Meat? We never see it," Itidal Al-Nazli, 35, the mother of 10 children, told The Independent Friday, September 15.

Though she was not expecting visitors, Nazli was happy to display the sparse contents of her refrigerator.

Six rather shriveled peppers, a bag of coffee, three olives in a bowl, a bag of charcoal, and three bags containing crusts of bread, was all that is left for her large family.

"I have no milk for the children," Nazli says.

The US and EU froze aid to the cash-strapped Palestinian Authority after Hamas came to the helm of power following its sweeping parliamentary elections.

Israel has also suspended the monthly payment of customs duties, worth more than 50 million dollars, it collects on behalf of the Palestinian Authority on goods that transit through its territory.

UN relief coordinator Jan Egeland warned earlier this year that the situation in the Gaza Strip was a "ticking time bomb".

No help

Nazli says she receives no handouts from local charities or even the UN food coupons handed out to refugees.

Nazli took a two-year qualification in teaching Arabic only to find, like so many other Gaza graduates, that there were no jobs.

Adding insult to injury, her husband Sami, 38, is also unemployed.
"He used to work four or five days every month, doing odd jobs," she says. "But now there is nothing."

A few doors down, Souad al Qaraya, 33, weeps repeatedly as she describes her struggle to feed her five children.

"We had bread - one shekel - beans - one shekel," she says of yesterday's family breakfast. "That's it."

Her husband Samir, 46, lost his job two years ago when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

The Palestinian government has been unable to pay civil servants their salaries for the past six months due to the crippling aid cutoff.

The World Bank has warned that EU and US aid cut would adversely impact at least 30 percent of the Palestinian population which is dependent on government salaries.

Unemployment stands at around 45 percent and the World Bank has estimated that two-thirds of the Gaza Strip population (1.4 million) lives below the poverty line, earning less than two dollars a day.

Though she voted for Hamas in January's parliamentary elections, Nazli does not blame the Hamas-led government for the deplorable conditions.
"I blame the governments of America and Britain for this but not the peoples because they don't know about us," she fumed.

Thanks for the world for ignoring these people , thanks for israel for preventing aids to these poor people . and please don't forget to balme Hamas !! because it is the best thing you can do !!

I'm afraid you may be correct, DuH. If the palestinians complain about hardships or unfair treatment from Israel, the Israelis just claim they are exagerating the problem. I hope Americans will wake up soon to the conditions Palestinians are facing everyday. It just might give us a little clue as to why they act out violently at times.

I can't believe the US blockade. Palestinians democratically elect Hamas into power, so we set up a blockade. I thought we were trying to bring democracy into the middle east.

what i do not understand is why are nations ever allowed to become welfare nations,
yes i understand that if one nation (israel) is helped it automaticaly puts down the other nation into disadvantage like givind one of the fighters in a ring a weapon, well in a case like this it is clear US is not being fair by giving Israel aid, i dont think US is unfair by not giving to palestine, but an absolute criminal by giving to another criminal like Israel.

Default Just maybe....

Maybe next time there are Elections in Gaza, they will CHOOSE to Elect Representatives that will DEAL with these problems rather than choose people who want to start Wars?!?!?

They have no one to blame but themselves. They chose to have Terrorists Represent them, and this is the consequences of those actions...

We don't HAVE to help people who want to kill us, do we? Same with Israel, they don't have to help those who have sworn to annihilate them, do they?

Isn't Democracy GREAT!

It means we can hold the PEOPLE ACCOUNTABLE for their CHOICE!

Regards,
Gaar

Germany "Elected" Hitler too, but we chose not to side with him either.

We don't have to support anyone who wishes to kill us, do we?

Gaar
