Default Zimbabwe Government About to Make Food Shortages Even Worse

Zimbabwe Government About to Make Food Shortages Even Worse

"Mugabe has turned the whole country into criminals by running down the economy to the point where the vast majority of businesses and individuals source their foreign currency requirements on the black market, more politely known as the parallel market."

Rest of Article Here

The more power given to government, the worse things become... I would love to ship every liberal collectivist in the U.S. to Zimbabwe and let them experience the joys of central planning first hand.

Default But what can be done?

The US must send food shipments right away. American celebs like Danny Glover & Snoop Dogg should try to raise awareness of hunger there. Maybe Oprah could go there too. A website where credit card donations to the Zimbabwean department of agriculture should be made. American farmers who have been hit bad by financial hard times could be given incentives to grow wheat & maize for the effort. Do something, get involved!

Quote:
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced that it is delivering an additional 47,400 metric tons (MT) of food assistance to Zimbabwe. This donation will be distributed through the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) and the NGO Consortium for the Southern Africa Food Security Emergency (C-SAFE).

This additional tonnage from USAID will bring the total fiscal year 2007 U.S. food assistance to Zimbabwe to 143,270 metric tons, valued at approximately $145 million -- meeting approximately one-third of the assessed food emergency needs through the country's next harvest in March of 2008.
This was a few months back, so I am not sure what we are currently doing. This is somewhat ridiculous, we need to send millions of aid in food every few months? The burden should not rest on our shoulders, but it is nice to see us aiding Zimbabwe.

Americans have always stepped up to the bat as far as african hunger is concerned. If you are against giving generously it says a lot about your personal character, doesn't it. Feed the starving africans! Feed them! I'm cereal.

I am not against giving generously, I am however against creating dependency.

Something about teaching a man to fish, sending aid doesn't seem to fix anything.

Besides I can't be against the size of the welfare state in the U.S. if I am for creating a welfare continent. I would like to think I am not that much of a hypocrite.

I will say, I have much more sympathy for people who don't have the opportunity to provide for themselves, who go to a grocery store and find only vinegar for sale, than I do for people here in the U.S.

Everyone should have the opportunity to provide for themselves and their family.

Unfortunately any donors to Zimbabwe are also (reluctantly) sponsoring Mugabe's continued oppression.

To my mind the failing here falls largely on the African Union and South Africa for failing to make any serious sanctions (or even criticisms) in response to his excesses.

Mbeki is a disgrace.

No no...when I asked "What has the U.N. done about it," that didn't mean "Please bring me more socialist banter."

It really meant, "What has the U.N. done about it?" It's a simple question really.

...well, I guess not simple to the lefty hate machine.

Yawn

The Un has/is providing co-ordination of development aid and strategic support and assistance towards the achievement of Zimbabwe's Milleniun Development Goals.

The UN has reported and condemned the abuses that Mugabe has perpetrated, such as his 'slum clearance' program.

The UN has campaigned and provided emergency relief and transitional aid to the victims of Mugabe's policies.

UNFPA, UNAIDS and UNICEF are all involved and active in Zimbabwe.

What would you like them to do? Invade?

My point (which you chose to evade) is that the UN is what its constituent members make it. It is facile to complain of its failings if you are not only less than fully commited to its success but have actively undermined its authority and flouted your own pledges towards it.
