A lot of people are scared. Many could say they are rightfully emotionally moved. Something does seem amiss in America, as though something bad is heading its way. People are sensing that. Apparently millions of people. And while some will definitely take their efforts to one degree of extreme or another, and some will have their root causes with disagreeable ideologies, they still are doing what everyone is going to regret not doing when something bad does happen. You cannot fault a person for thinking about his or her long-term self-sustaining self-preservation, or that thereof their family. The true test is whether or not something bad really does happen, and I'm sure three million people wouldn't mind being the blunt of some jokes when the lights and heat stay on and everything is perfectly okay in America.

We died by the millions only to have a Depression reimposed ,sorry Capitialism its revolution for you and your government. Are you prepared to accept that the only alternative is global depression and WW3?

One couple living in fortress with stockpile of guns and 25,000 rounds of ammunition (just in case!)

Man keeps 1,000 fish in his swimming pool so he has plenty to eat in the event of the apocalypse

There was once a time when preachers standing on street corners predicting the apocalypse would have been deemed crazy.
Shoppers would cross the street to avoid the archetypal banner-waving man loudly proclaiming 'the end of the world is nigh.'

Today, however, it seems we're not quite so convinced that the rantings aren't actually prophecies for a doom-laden future.
As many as three million Americans now fall into the category dubber 'preppers' - people who are making detailed plans for the end of the world as we know it.

The preppers are an ever-growing group of survivalists who take extreme measures to prepare for a major catastrophic event.

One man from Phoenix keeps 1,000 tilapia fish in the deep end of his swimming pool which he plans to eat when a massive solar flare 'knocks civilisation back to the Stone Age.'
While a couple living in a gated-home with 25,000 rounds of ammunition have enough food to last half a century.

More than 300,000 people a month visit the movement's website, survivalblog.com, which catalogues how people are preparing for the worst.
The website has been set up by James Rawles, a former US Army intelligence officer, who is one of the movement's leading figures.

Speaking to The Times, he said: 'Should the worst happen, it's become apparent that the Government can't provide for everybody. And now that realisation is becoming more widespread.'

Events such as the recession, 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina has added to the growth of the movement.
The Red Cross has also reported an increase in the number of people learning first aid.
The group is now the focus of a new reality TV show on the National Geographic channel called Doomsday Preppers which will be broadcast in Britain later this year.

The programme features Megan Hurwitt from Houston who practices fleeing the city by foot in case of an oil crisis.
    ---
Tim Ralston, an ex-military man living with his family in Arizona, is one of many ‘Doomsday Preppers.’ His garage is full of food, water purifiers, weapons, and a trailer full of essentials ready to be hooked up to the family car should disaster strike.
About once a week, he takes his two sons out to the dessert for target practice. His one son has been practicing with an AK-47.

‘You just never know,’ he told ABC News. ‘God put you on this Earth for certain things, and for me, it’s to make sure my family lives and I can help other people.’
Among his stockpiling are water purifiers, a vast array of artillery, and canned chicken that is good for 15 years.

‘These are not just a handful of people living in the mountains,’ National Geographic Channel’s executive vice president of programming Michael Cascio told the Wall Street Journal. ‘They’re everywhere.’
Robert Vicino, a real estate agent, is garnering a significant profit from the fears by building luxury bunkers.
ABC News profiled Mr Vicino while he was in the midst of converting a Cold War bunker into a high-end escape pod, with many of the units already sold.

Meanwhile, Family Radio president Harold Camping has incorrectly predicted the end of the world for decades.

The Christian radio broadcaster said it would come to an end first in 1988, then again in 1994, and twice in 2011 – once in May and the other time in October.
None of them, obviously, came to fruition.

Where did this 3 million number come from? If these people are all hiding in bunkers with loads of ammunition, how did they find 3 million of them? And if they are that paranoid, how did they get close enough to interview any of them?

I'm a bit of a prepper. I find it weird when people use the Bible to pick an end date. Matthew 24:36 says "But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only"

And I find it weird when people obsess that they know a particular end in near.

I'm a coupon/bargain shopper, and stockpiling allows me to always pay bottom dollar. And I think it's smart to at least keep what the Red Cross recommends to have on hand in case of a disaster. I'm more prepared than that, but think less than that is irresponsible.

My wife and I have preppers guides and have been stockpiling. I'm not particularly worried about apocalypse (though I note that the left has as many scare stories as the right - the latest being climate change.) The main concern here in California is a major earthquake. If and when it happens, there's a good chance of there being few services available for many days, and perhaps weeks. Food, water, weapons, training and a bug out plan is a necessity. The semi-urban area where I live will be mess within 3 days of a disaster. I don't intend to stay in my home and wait for bureaucrats to come save me.

The best part is recycling the food and water every year for Burning Man.

There are extremes to preparation, just like there are extremes to everything else. Being prepared for disaster is not a bad thing. What will you do when there is a disaster? Sit in your home and demand help?

"The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion." - Albert Camus

Well, the great thing about America is we're free for people to be as crazy as they like. Unfortunately, some people choose to exercise that right more than others. I wouldn't necessarily call myself a "prepper" but once I read it would only take three days of no trucks running for most urban areas to run out of food, I started taking it a bit more seriously.
I'm too drunk to taste this chicken. - Colonel Sanders

The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money. -Alexis de Tocqueville
